Tossing the bloody towels on top of Elijah’s corpse, Kai wrapped him up in the thick comforter and blankets on the bed and left the body burrito on the floor while he tossed the clean duvet over the bed. After leaving it rumpled just enough to look like the bed had been recently slept in, Kai tossed Elijah over his shoulder and carried him down the stairs to the garage.

Cleanup and body disposal were typically not part of his job. He was just hired for the killing part. He had a couple of cleaners on speed dial to handle the messy shit, but there was no way any of them could reach the house before the cops were banging on the door. Luckily, Scott had been thorough in his training. He’d showed Kai how to properly cover his tracks in all ways, and that included making a scene look like nothing happened at all.

Once in the garage, Kai briefly stowed the body behind a stack of boxes containing what appeared to be Christmas decorations and ran back into the house.

“Kai! The cops are outside, talking to the neighbor. I think they’re pointing at my house,” Dev called out as he crossed toward the living room.

As he reached Dev, Kai wrapped his arms around Dev and snuggled his face into the neck. “You have no idea how proud of you I am. You kept me safe. We’re almost in the clear. One more thing, and then I swear you can totally melt down.”

A shaky chuckle left Dev, and he gripped Kai’s wrist so tightly his knuckles were turning white. Dev’s hand was cold and clammy, but Kai knew he could do this.

“When they come, you are going to say that you’ve been hanging out with your boyfriend, watching a movie.” Kai paused and looked at the TV screen to find that one of the John Wick movies was on the screen and about halfway through. Perfect. Dev was a fucking genius.

“Are you sure? They might ask to talk to you.”

Kai chuckled and kissed his ear. “Don’t worry. I’m going to give them a good reason to want to leave.”

Dev looked at him a bit skeptically, but he didn’t get a chance to ask, thanks to the booming knock on the front door. Dev flinched in his arms, and Kai made a point of rolling his eyes. They had to teach that at cop school. All cops knocked the same way. It was supposed to be intimidating, but Kai just found it annoying.

“You’ve got this. You’ve been watching a movie with your boyfriend. Act surprised by everything. I’ll be right there,” Kai instructed. Just before he gave Dev a little push toward the door, he ran his hand over the front of Dev’s basketball shorts, fondling his cock. Dev’s mouth fell open as if he thought Kai had lost his mind, and Kai licked his lips.

As Dev disappeared into the hall, his eyes widened, his brain catching on to the part they were playing. The front door opened and Kai jumped into action, stripping off his clothes and taking a big swig of the whiskey. He paused to swish it around his mouth and swallowed it with a wince. Dear God, that burned.

“Why is it always your house, Mr. Relic?” a man was saying in a weary voice that echoed down the hall.

“I’m sorry. What’s the problem?”

“Your neighbors have reported hearing two to six gunshots in the neighborhood and at least two believe that the sounds came from your house,” another man replied. He sounded far less weary and a lot more suspicious.

“Gunshots? You can’t be serious,” Dev gasped. “I’ve been sitting here with my boyfriend all evening. We’ve been watching a movie. Do you think they heard that?”

“Someone’s here with you?”

That was Kai’s cue. “Babe! Is it the pizza boy?” Kai shouted, slurring his words just slightly. He shuffled out of the living room and stood in the middle of the hall, his mouth hanging open. “Whoa! Cops!”

The cops in question stared at him for a second and then quickly averted their eyes while Dev stared for at least another couple of seconds with his mouth hanging open. Naturally, it was due to the fact that Kai was standing there as naked as the day he was born.

“Honey!” Dev wheezed, sounding as if he were trapped somewhere between horror and hysterical laughter. “You’re still naked!”

“Oops!” Kai said with a goofy giggle and snatched one of Dev’s jackets from a hook in the hallway. He held the jacket to his junk and took a step toward the cops. “Sorry about that. Forgot my pants. What’s up?”

“They said the neighbors heard gunshots. They thought they were coming from here.”

“No way. That’s crazy. Oh, wait! Do you think they heard the TV when I pinned you down on the remote?” Kai grinned wickedly at the cops. “Dev sat on the volume and cranked it all the way up. We might have taken too long to notice it.” Kai wrapped an arm around Dev’s bare shoulders and nuzzled his neck again. “We’ve only got a few more days until Dev’s son is back from camp. We’re kind of enjoying having the house to ourselves.”
