“I…I don’t know. I don’t think he’s in immediate danger, at least.” Kai shoved a hand through his black hair and pulled it a little in frustration. “I think this was done to get my attention.”

“Looks like it worked,” Justin muttered.

He was right. It had gotten his attention, and Kai was ready to rain death and destruction on the head of the asshole who’d tied Devlin to him.

But this was also his fault. He should have walked away completely from Devlin and Jake the moment the contract on Devlin’s head had been canceled. Someone had noticed Kai’s interest in the Relic family. He didn’t know how, but he’d brought this to Devlin’s front door, and now he had to fix it.

“What’s the next step, Kai?” Gabriel said evenly. “We were planning to head to Jake’s camp and quietly keep an eye on him, but we can split up. One with Jake and one with Devlin.”

“No, both of you go to Jake. I’ve got to finish a job here, but I’ll be in Seattle in the morning. I’ll talk to Devlin over his morning coffee.” It was not a conversation he was looking forward to. He’d wanted to speak to Devlin, have a conversation like normal people did every day. This was definitely not what he’d dreamed of.

“Do you know who’s doing this? Or even why?” Justin chimed in.

“No. Not a clue, but I hope to have some leads by the end of the day tomorrow. I’ll keep you updated.”

They ended the call after trading plans and flight schedules. Kai felt a little more confident knowing that Jake was at least going to be safe and sound at his camp. The boy would never know the duo was watching his back, so he could focus on simply being a kid.

Kai wanted to think that whoever was trying to get his attention wouldn’t dare go after the kid, but he wasn’t going to count on it. He’d crossed some truly horrible people in his life. He was even related to a few nightmares, not that he’d seen any of them since he’d been a teenager.

He couldn’t even begin to guess what this was about, and there was no use in trying to figure it out until he could talk to Devlin and start his research. For now, he had to focus on taking care of Richard Carter as quickly as possible.

Another of his rules was to never leave a job unfinished.

He’d broken that rule only once, and that had been for Devlin Relic.

Kai was beginning to fear that he was going to break many more of his rules for Devlin before this killer was caught.

Chapter 3

Devlin was still blowing on his first cup of coffee when the doorbell rang. He squinted in the general direction of the front door, debating whether he could justifiably ignore it. The neighbors didn’t pop by at such an early hour.

The cops? Ugh. It was probably the cops returning with more questions. And if he didn’t answer the door, they were going to keep returning to harass him, which was only going to make him more anxious.

Since he was convinced it was the police there to annoy him before he could have his first cup of coffee, Devlin decided that he wasn’t going to feel bad about answering the door in his rattiest T-shirt and basketball shorts. Or the fact that he had horrible bedhead and at least two days’ growth on his cheeks, making him vaguely resemble a vagabond or an escapee from the mental ward.

It was only natural then that Devlin opened the door to find the all-too-sexy-for-his-sanity Kai standing on the other side. Even looking exhausted and slightly rumpled, Kai was too delicious for words. The tall Asian man looked at him with his longish black hair hanging in front of his eyes that seemed to be questioning whether he was welcome.

“Kai,” Devlin croaked out. “You’re here.” This only showed how little coffee Devlin had consumed, because he’d known Kai was coming to his house. Gabriel had texted him last night to warn him that Kai was on his way.

“I’m sorry to show up so early. I was worried.” The last two words came out in a whisper. He cleared his throat and started again in a strong tone, “I can return later.”

“No! No, please come in.” Devlin nearly jumped as if waking from a trance. He backpedaled, waving the assassin into his house. Because why not welcome an assassin into his house?

No, Kai wasn’t just an assassin. He was a good man. There had been ample opportunity for Kai to kill him when the twenty-seven-million-dollar contract had been on Devlin’s head, and he hadn’t. Kai had taken one look at him and Jake and walked away.

Or maybe Devlin wanted to believe Kai was a good man because he was so incredibly attracted to him. Devlin didn’t want to fathom the notion that he might be attracted to a bad person.
