Kai thrust hard, filling him again, and Dev shouted. The world blurred and was swallowed under a crashing wave of sizzling pleasure with every thrust. Kai filled him, touched him, stroked him. Every word that fell from his lips spoke of Dev’s perfection in his eyes. The slap of flesh, the slick sweat covering their bodies, the building orgasm that left him panting and begging for more.

All too soon, Dev’s balls drew up and the tingling started at the base of his spine. He tried to fight it, wanting to revel in the moment with Kai as long as humanly possible, but it was too late.

With a broken sob, Dev wrapped his fingers around his cock and stroked only twice before shouting his release. Hot semen coated his fingers and the world exploded. The orgasm stretched on and on, his body tightening around Kai as he increased his pace, fucking him through it.

Kai followed him a second later on a shout. His movements became stiff and jerky as he lost himself, filling the damn condom that separated them.

Breathing heavily, Kai pressed a kiss to his sweaty shoulder and carefully pulled free from his body. Dev collapsed onto the bedspread, too tired to care about the wet spot or the cum he was smearing with his hand. Kai returned a moment later. Dev thought he might have disposed of the condom in the bathroom. He wasn’t sure. He must have blacked out because the next thing he knew, the bed was tilting and Kai’s warm body was pressed to his back.

“Never. Moving. Again,” Dev announced between pants for air.

Kai chuckled and tightened his arm around him. “A good idea, but we may need food soon.”

“Later. This feels perfect right now.”

Kai hummed softly. “Perfect.”

Dev closed his eyes, praying his brain stayed offline for just a little bit longer. He didn’t know how long this was going to last. Didn’t even know if it was real. But he was determined to enjoy it while he had it.

Chapter 14

Dev tried not to frown as they entered the gun range. The previous day had been so utterly wonderful. The sex had been phenomenal, and Kai had remained close, cuddling him until they both climbed into the shower. From there, they fell into normal things like dusting and cooking. Conversation had been about everyday things like errands and items for the grocery list, avoiding anything that might trigger thoughts of Portland.

But bright and early this morning, Kai was hauling him out of bed and shuffling him off to the damn gun range. A secret little part of Dev might have hoped that the assassin had completely forgotten about his promise. He didn’t mind the self-defense part, though he suspected it wasn’t going to be some sexy wrestling that resulted in him getting his brains fucked out yet again.

The gun section of his training he didn’t want to contemplate. Guns were cold and final. They were a point of no return. He was afraid of pulling the trigger and killing someone. He didn’t want to kill anyone, even if it meant saving the life of Kai or his son. His brain argued that there was always another way.

What scared him more was failing to pull the trigger when he needed to and losing either Kai or Jake.

He sluggishly followed Kai inside and watched as the man checked them in, filling out forms, paying money. Dev did the same, but only after some prodding from Kai.

Too quickly they were given protection for their ears and eyes, then shown to a stall.

With incredible patience, Kai introduced him to a matte black Smith & Wesson handgun. It had an official name, but it slipped from his brain without ever catching. It was the simplicity of the weapon. As an engineer, he could appreciate the design, the efficiency, the user-friendliness of the machine.

But it was designed to kill, and that just wasn’t who he was. Which was very confusing since he was falling for a guy who made a living at being very good at killing. Dev didn’t want to think about that. There was no way of reconciling in his brain the sweet, caring person he’d been essentially living with the past week with the cold-blooded assassin.

After showing him gun safety, as well as how to load and unload the gun, Kai smoothly moved on to a proper shooting stance and firing. Each time the gun barked as he fired down the range at the paper target, Dev flinched. Kai’s hand squeezed his shoulders, reassuring him that he was right there with him the entire time.

He tried to remain philosophical about it all, but that didn’t work. He tried to mentally turn it into a game of improving his aim each time, but that didn’t work either.

In the end, he could only be grateful when he completed both full magazines and slipped the safety into place before handing the gun over to Kai. His worried eyes skimmed over Dev’s face and tense posture.
