“I’m sorry—” he started, but Dev cut him off with a shake of his head.
“Are we safe?”
“Yes,” Kai replied firmly, his look of embarrassment evaporating before Dev’s eyes. “We are as safe as I can make us.”
“Which bed would you like?” Dev asked.
“The one closest to the door, if you don’t mind.”
Dev grinned at him and walked over to the other bed, placing his bag on the foot of the mattress. He’d expected that answer. The man was determined to do whatever it took to keep him safe.
“Do you mind if I take a shower?” Kai inquired. He motioned one hand toward the bathroom, once again looking awkward and uncomfortable. It was clear that he wasn’t accustomed to staying with another person. He wasn’t used to having his personal space invaded.
“Of course not!” Devlin quickly replied, suddenly remembering the poor guy’s run through the woods after the killer. “How’s your knee? Would you like me to get you some ice?”
“No,” Kai said sharply and then winced. “I’m sorry. Please don’t leave the room or even open the door without me. I don’t think this killer will come after you—”
“But why take stupid chances?” Dev filled in with a smile. “It’s okay. I understand.”
“My knee is better. Thank you.” Kai paused next to Dev, looking a little awkward before he turned to his bag on the bed. He grabbed the entire thing and took it with him to the bathroom. Dev didn’t think he was afraid of Dev digging through his things while he was in the shower. It was more that he was nervous.
Considering they weren’t going to be staying more than the night, Dev riffled through his own bag, pulling out what he’d need for a shower as well as a change of clothes. He’d shower prior to going to bed so he didn’t have to do it in the morning. He hated mornings as much as Jake, and he would take every second of sleep he could manage.
With that settled, he grabbed his tablet and logged into the hotel’s Wi-Fi. He could at least surf for places they might be able to get dinner. But it didn’t take long to see that it was likely going to be pizza. At least the place had a lot of positive reviews.
When Kai returned, he was looking clean, relaxed, and in control. His dark hair was slicked back, making him appear even more dangerous if that were at all possible. After a brief discussion, pizza was ordered for delivery.
They chatted a little, though Dev did most of the talking. Not that Kai was likely interested. The conversation mostly settled on vacations he’d been on with Adam and Jake, as well as the time he’d been on the run through Montana and Idaho, hiding from assassins. While he normally liked the outdoors and camping, he preferred hotels and comfortable beds. Something close to civilization. Jake didn’t seem to have too much of a problem with that and had started to angle for a trip to Disney World.
“Does all my talking bother you?” Dev asked suddenly.
Kai blinked at him for a moment before shaking his head. “No. Of course not.”
Dev shrugged and looked down at the pizza crust still in his hand. He tossed it into the box with a couple of others. They’d demolished the large pizza they’d ordered. “You don’t talk much. I assumed it was because you don’t talk about yourself. But then I wondered if you don’t talk because I talk too much. And if I talk too much, you’re probably wishing that I’d just shut up.”
The man sitting on the bed across from him flashed him the most gorgeous smile, completely short-circuiting his brain. What was he saying?
“You don’t talk too much. I like listening to you. I like hearing about your life.”
“Not too boring?”
Kai shook his head, causing a few strands of hair to fall down in front of his eyes. “No. Not at all. It sounds peaceful to me.”
A loud bark of laughter left Dev, and he rocked back on his bed. “Peaceful? You should stay until after Jake gets home. One day with him running around the house and you won’t think it’s peaceful any longer.”
The smile on Kai’s lips turned a little sad, and he got up from the bed to place the empty pizza box on the dresser, needlessly tidying up the room.
Dev moved to the edge of the bed, placing his feet on the floor as he watched Kai move around the room. There was something else that he’d been toying with since he’d watched the man search their room.
“Actually, there’s something I wanted to ask you. I wanted to know if you’d train me.”
Kai’s face clouded over, and his entire body tensed as he turned to look at Dev. “I don’t understand. Train you in what?”
