My selfish ass could only think about what that would mean for her and I, and the new feelings I was coming to realize for her. Fuck! I snapped out of it to hear the rest of what Sherry was saying.
“I guess she seems nice enough, but still…” She didn’t say anything more, and I was too preoccupied with thoughts of Lora to care. Since she’d already had dinner with my parents and hers, we’d decided to go to the local ice cream parlor for dessert, her choice. I was already regretting agreeing to this shit. What the hell is wrong with Lora?
I know dad hadn’t told her about what he was thinking of doing because he’d asked me not to mention it to her or her mom until he got things squared away with the lawyer. Plus, I doubt she’d be reacting this way because dad wanted to adopt her.
I have my own reasons for not wanting Justine to adopt me, none of which have anything to do with her as a person and more to do with the fact that I wanted Lora to be something other than my damn sister. What a fucking mess.
I was being rude as fuck, but I couldn’t stop worrying and trying to put shit together in my head, so I only heard bits and pieces of what Sherry was saying as we entered the parlor, until I heard… “They really moved up in the world. My mom was saying she hopes your dad got her to sign a prenup just in case. You know how those kind of people are.”
My thoughts came to a screeching halt. “What did you say?” We’d already found a booth in the far corner, and the waitress was walking over. Sherry gave me a sticky sweet smile as she repeated her bullshit and then went even further.
“I mean come on, they’re not like us and that Lora girl, what’s her problem? She acts all stuck up like she belongs here when we both know if not for your dad she and her mom would still be in that nowhere town they came from.”
I just looked at her, wondering how pissed my dad would be if I just left her ass here. I’m not that much of a dick as to leave her stranded, but there was no way I was sitting there with her a second longer. “Don’t ever say shit like that about my family again.” I got up from the table and started to leave.
“Where are you going?” Is she serious?
“I’m taking you back home.”
“Why? Our parents wanted us to get together; that’s why they set this up.”
“I don’t think so, and I doubt seriously that my dad would do that without telling me.”
I started walking away, leaving her to follow if she wanted to or not. “I’m sorry, something came up.” I passed a tip to the server who was on her way to our table on my way out as I heard Sherry coming up behind me.
I knew I was being extra, but the truth is, I just wanted to get back to Lora to find out what the hell her problem is and was, in essence, taking it out on Sherry, still, even though I knew it, I couldn’t help being pissed.
Once we were back in the car, she strapped in and looked at me angrily. “Why’re you so mad?”
“Really? You just insulted half of my family.”
“But, they’re not…” I stopped the car and looked at her, more pissed than I was two minutes ago.
“Unless you wanna walk back, I suggest you not finish that sentence. They are my family; they’re the only family I have, period. And what’s more, you’re a stranger; you don’t know anything about us.” The look on her face was priceless. Did she really think that because we played in the mud a million years ago when we were kids that that gave her the right to say this shit to me?
We drove the rest of the way in silence. Her parents and mine were surprised to see us back so soon, and I barely held back my words of anger when I saw my dad. “Dad, can I see you a minute?”
“Sure son, what’s the matter?” He left his place on the couch next to his wife and followed me from the room.
“Did something happen, Tyler? You look upset.” I turned to face him, biting back the words of anger that were burning a hole in my tongue.
“Do me a favor dad, don’t volunteer my time again without asking me.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“You told Sherry and her parents that I’d take her out after you guys had dinner.”
“I never did that. She told us at the table that you two had plans. Didn’t she call you? She left the table to call you when we were about to leave.”
