“Is it just me, or are Rose and my dad flirting?” I ask. He just laughs at me.
“I don’t know. Guys aren’t great at recognizing those kinds of things. I mean, yes, they get along pretty well, but who knows?” He cocks his head sideways at me. “Why? Are you trying to set them up?”
I’m still shaking my head with disbelief.
“No, but don’t you think it would be a little weird?” I ask him. “My best friend and my dad?” He laughs at this and wraps his arms around my waist.
“That’s a tad hypocritical, don’t you think? After all, you’re her best friend, and I’m your dad’s best friend.” I giggle because he’s right. Who cares if there’s an age gap? And who cares if my dad is dating my former roomie? It’s all good, and Shane and I are proof that love is possible no matter the circumstances.
But then I turn to my man and press a kiss to his lips. He returns it with fervor, and I pull away, giggling and gasping.
“Shane, by the way, I have a surprise for you. I should tell you the real reason I wanted to have this dinner tonight, and why I baked this elaborate coconut-vanilla cake.”
“You mean it isn’t for Damon and Rose?” We both laugh at this.
“No! Be serious, babe. I have big news,” I say again, tugging lightly on his sweater. He stares at me with a cocked eyebrow.
“Oh really? Coconut cake is my favorite.”
I nod.
“I know, but it’s to celebrate something different. We’re pregnant again!” I announce gleefully. Shane is momentarily stunned, but then he grabs me and kisses me.
“This is incredible!” He pulls me in tight. “Everything is incredible. Our relationship, our lives, and our babies. I’m in love with you more than ever, and I just can’t express it enough,” he growls into my ear.
Suddenly, he puts me down carefully and gets down on one knee. He takes a small box from his pocket revealing a giant diamond ring inside.
“Shane, what are you doing? We’re already married and you already gave me a ring,” I say in a breathless gasp, my eyes wide.
“Well, my wife deserves a second diamond ring. One for each hand. Besides, what do you say we do this for real? Let’s have a giant, over-the-top wedding. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate our anniversary than to renew our vows. I loved our ceremony, and I know you did too, but sweetheart, we tied the knot at City Hall because you were already pregnant. But just think babe, now you can live out all those moments you dreamed of as a little girl. Telling your best friend you’re engaged, going dress shopping, and picking out a cake too. We can even fight over the centerpieces, if you want. What do you say?”
As tears of joy stream gently down my cheeks, I nod my head yes.
“Of course I want to marry you again, Shane.” He slides the second diamond ring onto my right hand, and we passionately kiss. “I suppose we should go share all the news. Do you think my dad will be overjoyed this time?” I ask playfully.
“Of course,” Shane responds, but the truth is that what my dad thinks doesn’t matter. What matters is our love for one another, and our commitment to each other. So what if my husband is older than me by more than twenty years? He’s handsome, successful, and obviously, incredibly virile even now. With another baby on the way, we’re going to have a beautiful life and a beautiful future.
