She felt his hand go behind her neck to keep her from pulling back as he parted his lips. When he didn’t take over the way she had expected him to, she grew bolder, letting the tip of her tongue slide into his mouth. The kiss turned into a bonfire.

He scooted closer to her, his chest practically covering hers as she explored his mouth. She felt herself melt when his hand went to the curve of her hips, tugging her closer until their bodies were melded together as their kisses grew wilder.

Desperately wanting to get even closer, she slipped her hands under his shirt, and then she lost what little sanity she had left at the feel of his skin under her hands. She felt as if she was lightning in a bottle, raw power contained in a living, breathing body. At any second, she felt like she would lose whatever control she had and the bottle would break.

Alanna couldn’t think of any instance in her life where she had actually been daring. Kissing Matthew was the most daring thing she had ever done. It was too late to second-guess if she should. Way too late. She was becoming afraid, that like the metal he worked with little effort, Matthew could bend her to his will.

She became so lost when his hand went between her thighs to rub her cleft before unbuttoning her jeans to lower the zipper. She twisted her hips under his hand when he started playing with her clit. As his fingers moved faster, she felt a sudden unbelievable emotion she had never felt before. Sensations rippled through her, making it impossible to deny what had just happened.

Breaking the kiss, she sat up with a jerk, gasping for breath. He didn’t try to pull her back down. Instead, he removed his hand to rub her back in long stokes, easing the desire that had spiraled to a flame out of her control.

Embarrassed, she practically lunged off the bed, forgetting it was elevated. She would have taken a nosedive if Matthew hadn’t caught her and slung her back onto the bed.

As she stared up at the ceiling, she blew a swath of hair out of her face to see Matthew’s contagious grin smiling down at her.

“This is so embarrassing.”

“Why?” he asked, tucking her hair behind her ear.

“I’m supposed to be working, not playing around.”

His grin slipped. “I wasn’t playing. Were you?”

“Matthew …”

He pressed a firm finger on the lines of her frown.

“Nuh-uh … I’m not going to let you ruin it.”

She refused to meet his eyes. “Ruin what?”

He clicked his tongue at her. “There you go again. Don’t worry.” He placed a chaste kiss on her forehead before getting off the bed. “I won’t rub it in that I just gave you the best orgasm known to womankind.”

She gaped at how loud his voice was, never mind the bragging tone he used, which had her holding back from laughing.

“Shh … Someone could come in.”

Matthew gave her a wink. “Okay, we’ll just keep this on the down-low.”

Alanna could only shake her head. “Go away.”

“Is that any way to speak to the man who just gave you—”

Rising up in one movement, she snatched up a pillow and threw it at him.

Matthew ran for the door, his laughter trailing after him.

“Goon,” she snorted out, watching as he grabbed his bow before taking off out the front door.

She jumped out of bed and started to run after him then realized there was a side door just inches away. Rushing to open the door, she gave Matthew a smart-alecky smirk.

“You better not kill Bambi’s dad!” she screeched as loudly as she could. Seeing the pained expression on his face, she rubbed her hands together as if she had just finished doing a great job, then shut the door.

“That’ll show him.”

Her glee vanished in a second when she realized she had slammed the door open with her jeans still unzipped, showing her belly. Burning embarrassment had her lifting her hands to her burning cheeks. She zipped her jeans back up and smoothed her T-shirt back down.

“The best orgasm known to womankind.” She sniffed inelegantly then started grinning.

Damn. He wasn’t wrong.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Alanna tickled the baby as he held his favorite stuffed lion protectively clutched to his chest.

“Got you.” She picked the baby up, sending him into peals of laughter.

“I see you two are having fun,” Ginny said as she walked across the room.

“You have a good nap?” Alanna placed Freddy back on the floor, returning the lion to him.

“Yes. Thank you. You two eat lunch?”

“Yes, and Freddy finished his whole bottle. Can I do anything else for you before I leave?”

“No, I’m good. Where are you off to now?”

“Silas wants me to meet him at the storage building. We’re going to organize the new stuff we brought yesterday.”
