“Do you want to go?” David asked.

“Yes. But I don’t want to screw up at work. Yeah, I’ve never called in, but what if I lose my job—one or both of them? I don’t want to screw myself later because I…well, because I want to screw the both of you.”

“How about this. You make some calls to see if you can get your shifts covered. You usually pick up for other people, so maybe someone will change days. If you can get them covered, we’ll go. If you can’t, we’ll pick some dates for you to request off—soon—and we’ll go then. I have to agree with Jordan. I like the idea of the three of us getting away. We can focus on us—on what we each want and expect out of this—without any distractions, but I know how much your independence means to you. Having your jobs is part of that, and I don’t want you to risk that either.”

I thought about it for…oh, maybe 2.2 seconds. “That sounds like a good idea.”

“I think so too,” Jordan said, climbing off my lap. “Glad I thought of it.”

“You’re so damn feisty.” I chuckled, then looked at David. Suddenly, we were both attacking Jordan, tickling and kissing him, and I was…happy.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Jordan

A little while later, David took me aside to talk to me. He didn’t give me every detail of what he and Ian had talked about, but he wanted to make sure I felt included, that I didn’t have questions, and that I knew this thing between us meant all three of us, on equal footing. I figured he’d probably told Ian some personal things I didn’t know, but at this point, Ian needed those things while I didn’t. David was good at being who we each needed him to be, and I adored him for it.

Once we were done talking and Ian had rearranged his work schedule, we got ready and left, and on the way stopped by my house.

“Good morning, Granny. These are my friends David and Ian. We’re going to spend a couple of days in Big Bear. Guys, this is my kick-ass grandma, Lucy Danvers.”

“Nice to meet you, ma’am,” Ian said.

David greeted her as well, and when she cocked a brow, I could see the wheels turning in her brain. She knew I’d been staying a lot at David’s house, but I hadn’t mentioned his age. To be honest, I was a little worried, if only because of the past—my mom having fallen for an older, wealthier guy. David was nothing like him, though.

“Quite a bit older than them, aren’t you?”

“Granny!” Holy shit. I should’ve been expecting her to say that. She was never afraid to say what she felt.

“Just stating the truth,” Grandma added as David said, “No, it’s fine. She’s correct. I am older than both of them, yes.”

He was only forty-one. I was twenty-three. I didn’t see how that mattered so much. Plus, she didn’t know that we were…whatever it was we were doing. As far as she knew, we were just friends. A friend I spent the night with, but still.

“There’s nothing wrong with that,” I said, nervous.

“You’re taking them both away for the weekend?” Her lips stretched into a firm line.

“Yes,” David answered simply, not making any excuses.

“It’s fine, Granny. David’s my friend.” He was, but he’d quickly become more. Still, I wanted this conversation to end. “I’ll be right back. I’m gonna grab some things.”

It was awkward, leaving Granny with Ian and David. I tossed a few things in a bag as fast as I could, then headed back into the living room as Ian was saying, “I’d never seen Golden Girls before. I tease Jordan about it, but I really like it.” Thank God Ian had taken over the conversation.

“He’s a Dorothy, Granny.”

“Everyone needs a Dorothy in their lives.” She patted Ian on the shoulder, and I could swear Ian glowed. Poor Ian. I hated that he’d never had anyone to love him other than Finley. I made a silent commitment to make sure he never doubted he had people who cared about him.

“Yes, they do.” I winked at him and hugged my grandma. “Call me if you need anything, okay? I’ll keep my phone on me. I went shopping a couple of days ago, and I checked the kitchen and you’re still all stocked up. Your meds are good, so you won’t need any refills or anything.”

She waved off my concern. “I know that, silly boy. Us oldies, we know how to take care of ourselves, don’t we?” she told David, whom she seemed to have completely ignored until now. Yeah, she definitely figured something was going on, and she didn’t like David’s age.

“Yes, ma’am, we do,” he replied smoothly. It didn’t seem to bother him, but I wasn’t sure.
