“It’s just like your drawing.” Jared sighed happily as a fancy-dressed lady approached the big wooden doors of one of the courtrooms.

“Are you all here for the Stapleton-Bookman adoption?” she asked.

“All of us.” Dad led the way in while Pops stuck close to me.

“It’s okay to be overwhelmed,” he whispered. “If it helps, I am too.”

“Just can’t believe how many people here like us,” I admitted. I’d been…tolerated. Like some teachers had been nice. Few kids at that one school we’d been at a whole year. But it wasn’t until Safe Harbor that I’d met so many people who not only put up with us but also seemed to actually want to spend time with us. Crazy.

But good. Maybe someday I’d get used to it.

“They don’t merely like us, Kane. They love us.”

Oh. There was that word again, the one that made my chest hurt and my hands clench. It was hard to get something you wanted so damn bad. Love. Dad said it all the time. Pops, too, a fair bit. Perhaps sometime I could say it back.

“Guess you better hurry up and adopt me then, or there’s gonna be a lot of unhappy people here.” That was about as close as I was getting to love right then, and Pops seemed to know it because he smiled.

“Can’t let them down.” He stopped right by the door, though, and pressed something hard and metal into my hand.

“What’s this?” I turned the key, a plain metal one with a blue top labeled home.

“You’re about to be officially part of the family. And you’re starting high school in the fall. About time you had a house key of your own.”

I couldn’t speak. Not one word. I just hugged him super tight. Home. I could always come back to this home. Always. This was my reminder. I’d always have a home here. And for the first time, I truly believed it. We’d found our forever home in Safe Harbor with our forever dads.
