“Sounds good,” my friend says cheerily. “Soon you’ll be a cowgirl just like me!” But then, she notes my empty champagne flute. “Oh, hey. You’re out of champagne,” she says as she reaches for a chilled bottle of bubbly. “Let me fix that.”
“Oh no, I’m not having any,” I quickly tell her as I place my hand over the top of the empty crystal glass.
Juniper stops mid-gesture and I glance at her own empty flute.
“But wait, you’re not having any either,” I observe slowly.
“You’re not – ” she starts to say.
At the same time, I ask, “Are you…?”
We stare at each other for a moment as realization strikes.
“Oh my god, we’re both pregnant!” we cry at the exact same moment.
“I can’t believe it,” I gush. “This is a dream come true!”
“I’m so happy for you,” Juniper squeals. “For us,” she amends.
We’re mid-embrace when our handsome new husbands stride over, all four of them content, happy, and in love.
“What’s all this joyful merrymaking about?” Brandon asks as he sits down next to me. Ben pulls up a chair on my other side while Shane and Stanton follow suit, forming protective circles and Juniper and I with their large forms.
My best friend and I share an eager smile and nod our heads.
“We’re pregnant!” we shout together, loudly enough that most of our guests can hear. There’s a stunned silence, and then the crowd roars. Our parents cheer in unison and then begin to cry with joy. Around us, our husbands look teary too as they thump each other’s backs while shouting congratulations.
But as the cheering dies, I shoot Brandon and Ben a warm glance.
“There’s something else,” I whisper sweetly.
“What, honey?” Ben asks me as he tucks a stray curl behind my ear. “What is it?
I blush as I look from one man’s face to the other. “I’m having twins!”
The brothers look stunned, but then they literally leap into the air, hooting and hollering with joy.
“You’re expecting twins?” Juniper echoes, her smile wide.
“I am! You’ll have to teach me everything because you already have two sets,” I giggle. She grins.
“Well,” she begins slowly, “We can learn it all side by side, because I’m having twins again, too!”
I gape at her.
“Are you serious? Three sets of twins, Junie? So you’ll be a mother of six?”
With that, she nods, and all of us embrace in one large, joyous hug while laughing, crying, and exchanging congratulations. I’m truly overwhelmed by how wonderful life can be, and find myself with tears dripping down my cheeks. After all, Juniper and I are small town girls from Lake Puckett, Wyoming. We’re normal, or so we thought. But now, we’ve found love at the hands of four men and it works for us. Maybe a double wedding with two sets of husbands bends the rules, but you know what? All’s well that end’s well, and with another two sets of twins on the way, our hands will be full and our hearts filled with love.
