My mate…

I still can’t believe she’s here. It feels surreal.

All those feral shifters I took out… This is all they wanted in their lives. A moment like this with their mates.

Of course not having it made them go crazy. I can’t blame them for that.

If someone took my sweet Adalynn away from me, I’d go crazy too.

Adalynn’s eyes fall closed with a satisfied moan. I grab the sheets and admire her body one more time before I pull them on top of her.

She’s stunning.

She’s here.

And she’s all mine.

Chapter Eight

Adalynn

I’m sitting in the backseat with Nathan as we pull onto a residential road. Remy is sitting in the passenger seat in front of me and I can’t stop staring at his big arms sticking out on both sides of the seat. He’s so hot. He’s all I can focus on.

I still can’t believe he was inside me. I can almost still feel him in there and it’s making me breathless. It’s also making me wonder when the next time we can do that will be.

“Why are you smiling so much?” Nathan asks.

I turn around with a gulp and see him staring at me with a scrunched-up forehead. The poor kid is trying hard not to cry as his whole world crumbles around him and here I am perving over my new crush in the front.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper as I take his hand. “Are you doing okay?”

“No,” he says as he looks out the window at the familiar streets. “I don’t want to go home yet. You said we could spend the whole summer together.”

Colin reaches behind the seat to take his hand, but Nathan refuses. He crosses his arms and looks out the window.

“Nathan,” I whisper. “Your dad is doing his best.”

“No, he’s not. He can’t wait to get rid of me.”

“That’s not true,” Colin says as he looks at him in the rearview mirror. “I was looking forward to being with you since your mom agreed to let you come stay with me.”

“Then why do I have to leave?”

“It’s not safe.”

Nathan doesn’t want to hear it. “I don’t care.”

Silence fills the car as we get closer to his grandparent’s house.

I don’t want them to part ways like this. It’s going to kill Colin knowing that Nathan is mad at him. There’s no telling how long it will be until Valerie defies her parents and lets my brother see him again, especially after this.

Tears start streaming down Nathan’s cheeks as we pull onto his street. My stomach drops when I see the GPS: Destination arrival in less than a minute.

Colin pulls into the driveway and slowly puts my car into park.

“It’s not fair,” Nathan bursts out. “How come I never get to see you? All of my friends see their dads all the time.”

Colin squeezes the steering wheel, lowers his head, takes a deep breath, and then turns around with red watery eyes.

“I wish we could see each other all the time, bud. I really do.”

“Then why are you dropping me off early? This was supposed to be our time.”

I can’t even watch. My heart is shattering.

“Come,” I say to Remy as I tap him on the shoulder. “Let’s give them some privacy.”

We get out of the car and let the boys talk. I hope Colin can get through to him and let the boy know how much he loves him, but actions speak louder than words and all Nathan is going to remember is him driving away.

The door opens and Valerie’s parents come out. They’re not warm friendly grandparents in the least. They’re glaring at Colin as they wait on the porch.

Mrs. Barton shoots me and Remy a nasty glare. I give one right back to her.

“Nathan,” she calls out as she charges down the steps. “Come out of that car right this instant and get inside.”

I rush over and cut her off. “Give him a minute. He’s talking to his father.”

She sneers at me behind her glasses. “The shifter?”

“Yes,” I say as I cross my arms and hold her eyes. “The shifter who’s also a wonderful man.”

She snorts out a laugh. “If he’s so wonderful, why is he dropping off my grandson early? Nathan! Get inside!”

“If you bothered to get to know him, I’m sure you’d like him.”

“Doubtful,” she says with a look of disgust. “That nasty beast with his dirty genes violated my daughter. And what’s worse, he put that filthy DNA abomination into my grandson as well.”

I grind my teeth as my muscles quiver. If this chick wasn’t in her seventies, I’d clock her for saying that.

“Why don’t you go wait inside?” I hiss through my clenched jaw.

“Why don’t you and the two brutes you arrived with get off my lawn before I call the cops?” she hisses back. “Nathan! Get. Inside. Now!”

Remy walks over and stands by my side as Mr. Barton walks down the steps toward the car. “Give the boys a minute, will you?” Remy says.
