“Like what?”

I shrug as I slide my hands along the steering wheel. “I don’t know. What are you into?”

“I enjoy hunting feral bears.”

I exhale as I shake my head. “Besides that.”

I guess it’s all heavy stuff.

“I play guitar.”

“Me too!” I say, nodding encouragingly. “Well, I took a couple of lessons when I was twelve years old. Actually, I haven’t touched it since… I guess I don’t play guitar.”

He smiles, finding my awkwardness amusing.

“Tell me everything about you,” he says. “I was up all night wondering.”

“I’m a dental hygienist,” I tell him. “And I do some personal tennis lessons with a few clients.”

Remy looks impressed as he looks at me. “Teeth and balls. Interesting.”

He’s so curious about me. He keeps asking me all sorts of questions, making me ramble on about my work and friends. I tell him about dental hygiene school and the trip I took to Europe a few summers ago.

We’re talking for an hour non-stop when Nathan has to go pee. I pull over at a gas station and we all get out to stretch our legs.

Nathan pulls me over and I bend down when he motions that he wants to whisper in my ear.

“Is that your boyfriend?”

I smile as I look at Remy stretching his big muscular arms. The sexy view makes my breath quicken. “I guess he is.”

Colin makes his way over to Remy and I tense up while I lean in to eavesdrop. I really don’t want them fighting. Especially in front of Nathan.

“Thanks for being here,” Colin says, shocking me to my core. “I want you to promise to take me out quickly if my bear gets out of control.”

Remy looks at him with a newfound respect. “That’s big of you, Colin. I won’t do it in front of the boy.”

Colin’s chin quivers for a second, but he’s putting on a brave face. “I’d appreciate that. I don’t want him to think I’m a monster.”

“I’ve seen the way the petit ours looks at you,” Remy says as he puts his hand on my brother’s shoulder. “You’re his hero. Not a monster.”

“And I’ve seen the way my sister looks at you,” Colin says. “You’re mates, aren’t you?”

Remy nods.

Colin takes a deep breath as he sizes up my new man. “Let’s go inside. I’ll buy you a strip of beef jerky or something.”

Two of the three most important males in my life chat lightly as they walk over to the gas station. I take the hand of the third most important and follow them in.

Chapter Six

Remy

Traffic was a nightmare, so we decided to stay in a hotel overnight. I was fine to keep driving—I have endless energy when I’m around my girl—but I liked the idea of having some alone time with my mate, in a hotel, with a locked door, so I quickly agreed.

“Enjoy your stay,” the receptionist says as she hands over three keycards. One for Colin and Nathan, one for Adalynn, and one for me. There’s no way we’re not sleeping in the same room by the end of the night, but I guess my mate is not ready to admit that yet. That’s okay with me. I’ll give her all the time she needs.

“Should we all meet up for dinner?” Adalynn asks when we get off the elevator on our floor.

Colin looks at the two of us and shrugs. “I think I’ll just grab some burgers across the street and we’ll eat in our room.”

“Yeah! Can we, Dad?” Nathan says with excitement. “And rent a movie?”

He looks down at his son and smiles. “Sure!”

Nathan hugs his big leg and looks so damn happy it makes my heart hurt.

I sigh as I remember walking up to his bear with my sword in my hand. I was ready to take this man’s life. I wouldn’t have hesitated. I wouldn’t have thought twice about cutting his head off. I was ready for it. I was looking forward to it.

The thought makes me sick now…

How could I so eagerly deprive Nathan of his father? How could I be so heartless?

Nathan pulls Colin’s hand, excited to have a fun night with his dad. I’m glad our mission failed. I’m glad he gets to have a movie night with his hero.

“We’ll meet up tomorrow morning,” Adalynn says. “I’m in room 517 if you need anything.”

“Thanks,” Colin whispers with a nod. “We’re in 502. And don’t worry about me, I think my bear knows we’re on the way to his mate because he’s doing a bit better.”

“I’m glad to hear that, Colin,” she says with a sad smile. “Just try to enjoy the night. Keep your focus on Nathan.”

He nods sadly and then smacks my shoulder with a grin. “Take her somewhere nice for dinner. I saw a fancy Italian restaurant across the street from the car wash.”

“Will do,” I say with a nod.
