“And who the hell are you?” Mr. Barton answers in an indignant tone as he looks my mate up and down. “Get the hell off my property. The two of you.”

“We’re not going anywhere,” Remy says with a smirk. “So, I suggest you keep your damn mouths shut until my new friends are done talking.”

Mr. Barton’s mouth drops open in shock, but he doesn’t do anything about it. I’m sure he’s not used to people talking to him that way and I can tell he’s thrown for a loop.

“If you took the time to meet Colin,” Remy says in a respectful tone, “you’d realize how lucky you are to have a family member like him. He’s trying his best, which is all you can ask from a man.”

Mrs. Barton stares at him for a moment with narrowed eyes and then spins on her heels and marches back to the house. “I’m calling the cops.”

“Wow, that was fast,” I say as a black car comes skidding around the corner.

Remy raises his chin in the air and inhales long and hard. “That’s not the cops, ma chérie. Not the regular cops anyway.”

The car comes flying up to the house and skids to a stop on the lawn.

No…

Jackson, Grayson, and Ryker step out, all looking furious.

“How did they find us?” I ask.

“They probably tracked the boy,” Remy answers as he narrows his eyes on them. “Found where he lives. That’s what I would have done.”

“How’d I know you’d be here?” Grayson says as he slams the door closed so hard the whole car shakes. “Traitorous rat motherfucker.”

Colin darts out of the car. Nathan follows, looking at the men curiously.

“Everybody calm down,” Remy says as he rushes between the Foxhounds and my brother. “Let’s not escalate this situation.”

Just them being here is escalating it. Colin’s bear is acting up again. His body is swelling and his eyes are shining that eerie golden color.

He bends over with a growl, trying to hold the beast inside.

“Just stay back,” Remy says with his palm up. “He can handle it.”

“He can’t,” Jackson snaps. “If you weren’t so blinded by your mate, you’d realize it.”

I look at my brother and will him to succeed. But it’s not looking good. Brown fur sprouts out of his strained neck as his body shakes violently. He’s already mid-phase and barely hanging on.

“Dad?” Nathan whispers as he backs away in fear.

Mr. Barton rushes over and grabs the boy. “Let’s go inside,” he says as he pulls him back. “It’s not safe around your father.”

I wish I could argue, but he’s right. Nathan has to get out of here. Colin’s grizzly is way too unpredictable.

Ryker, the one with the big tattooed arms, shakes his head. “We gotta take him out before he phases and destroys half the neighborhood. Come on, Remy!”

Remy stands in a fighting position and raises his fists. “You’re going to have to get through me first.”

“Fuck, Remy!” Jackson snaps. “Don’t do this! You want to be an enemy of the state?”

“Better that than be an enemy of my girl,” Remy says, looking more determined than ever.

He’s doing this for me. For us.

It hits me hard. I love him. I’ve never loved anyone like I love that man.

“Fine,” Ryker says as he pulls off his shirt. “Then we’ll do it the fun way.”

A huge Kodiak bear rips out of Ryker with a roar.

“Get back, mon cœur,” Remy warns as he shoots me a look.

The smell of the bear pushes my brother over the edge. His giant feral grizzly bear explodes out of him and turns around with a monstrous snarl. He’s so big. So angry. I can’t believe we’ve been riding with that thing this whole time.

“Wait!” Remy shouts when the three Foxhounds are about to charge. “The other bears… They lost their feralness. There’s hope for him! The AFA is going to be reformed!”

“It’s not reformed yet,” Grayson says. “We still have orders to kill.”

“Your whole family was slaughtered by a feral bear,” Jackson says. “Think about that.”

“He’s my family now,” Remy says as he steps beside Colin. “He’s the brother of my girl and I’m not going to let either of them down.”

Colin’s bear snarls and swipes a vicious paw at Remy. He manages to leap away just in time.

Come on, Colin… Help us out here!

“We’re still working out some issues,” Remy says with red cheeks as he gets up and dusts himself off.

“You’re seriously going to pick him over us?” Jackson says, looking hurt. “After all we’ve been through?”

“I’m picking right over wrong,” Remy says proudly. “There’s a good father in there worth saving. It’s right to protect him.”

“Fine,” Jackson says as his body begins to shake. “Have it your way. Interfere and we’ll be forced to take you in.”

“You’ll have to catch me first,” Remy says with a smirk before he lets his wolf burst out.
