“Only because he wants more money from you. I get a bad vibe from that guy. He’s up to something.”

“I don’t know. He has been with me for so long.”

“Didn’t you say you had your hesitations?”

“Because he hasn’t been getting me as many auditions, but that might be my fault, especially after the way that studio wrote me off. I can’t blame Randy for the way my behavior has hurt my career.”

“No, but you can blame him for being sleazy. I really don’t trust him. Are you sure you can’t work with someone else?”

Spencer shrugs. “I don’t know. It seems like my only chance is with Randy.”

I sigh. “Okay, fine, but I want it known that I don’t like the guy.”

“You didn’t like him much before you met him.”

“I suppose that’s true. I still don’t like how much he pushed you to be with her,” I say, my eyes trailing over to where Candy is playing it up in front of a group of people. She looks over and winks at Spencer, gesturing for him to join her.

“Ugh. You have to go, don’t you?”

Spencer takes my hand again. “We have to go. Some of those folks are press. I do have to talk to them, but I don’t have to do it without you.”

“I’ll be standing off to the side, though.”

He kisses my cheek. “As long as you’re near me, that’s all I care about.”

Candy tries to get Spencer as far away from me as possible, shooting me devilish looks like she has won some prize that I didn’t know we were competing for. If the trophy is Spencer, she certainly hasn’t won, but I feel she’s not done playing, even though the movie is finished.

While Spencer does his thing with the press, I take in the little groups of people scattered around the studio, remarking to myself at how normal they all seem. I feel out of place, but at the same time, no one has treated me like I don’t belong here. Everyone I met has been super nice, and a few of the girls even exchanged numbers with me like we might become friends. Who knows how that will pan out, but it doesn’t hurt to try.

Spencer snakes his arm around me and kisses my cheek again. “That’s all the business for tonight. I’m officially free to have fun.”

I laugh and kiss his lips. “Then fun we shall have.”

The rest of the party consists of delicious food catered from a barbeque restaurant, a cake big enough for someone to jump out of (though, unfortunately, no one does), and a lot of mingling with people who are way cooler than me.

Finally, after a few hours, it’s time to go home, and Spencer and I celebrate behind closed doors.

Chapter Thirty-Two – Spencer

I should be used to having time off since it always happens when I’m between movies, but I still haven’t figured out what to do with myself when I’m not working. It has been one week since we officially wrapped, and I’m going crazy with the idle time. They haven’t called me in for reshoots, and press doesn’t start for a while, so that project is pretty much done for now. I’ve had two auditions, neither of which have panned out, and I keep begging Randy to get me more. I’m even trying to solicit my own work, which is not technically against my contract with Randy, though I don’t like doing it anyway.

To keep myself busy, I’ve been spending excessive time with Leila. It’s Friday morning, and I’m sitting in the Frills office playing with the stress ball she keeps on her desk. Her two coworkers are out ‘in the field’ today, so it’s just the two of us.

Leila hangs up the phone call she was on and looks over at me. “I like having you around while I’m working,” she says, the words trailing off a bit.

“But?”

She laughs. “But we’ve been spending so much time together. Like, literally every second of every day this last week. I think we need to take a break.”

My eyes widen, and I sit forward in my chair. “Are you breaking up with me?”

“Oh, no, that’s not what I meant! Just like a night where we do things separately. I don’t think it’s healthy for us to be together so much. Even married couples spend time apart.”

I sit back with a relieved breath. “Oh, okay, good. You scared me for a second.”

“Sorry! I didn’t mean to. I just was thinking it’d be a good idea, and Malia wants to introduce me to some of her friends tonight for a girls’ night.”

“Ah, so you’re telling me you already have plans, and so I need to figure something out for myself.”

“Exactly,” Leila says with a laugh. “And I’m not canceling for you. I need more friends.”
