“Screw you guys. I want you off my property before I call the police.”

“We got what we wanted,” the smug one, who is probably the leader of this pack, says. They all gather their belongings and start walking down the driveway where they hid their cars.

I hate these guys. They’re the hardest part about being a celebrity, even one as down on his luck as I am.

I slam the door and lean against it. When I woke up, I was so happy. It has barely been fifteen minutes since then, and somehow my world has been flipped around.

My phone, still sitting on the coffee table where I left it when we got back last night, buzzes. I look and find Candy’s name on the screen. As much as I’d like to ignore it, she is my costar, so she could be telling me they need me for filming or something.

“Hello?”

“Hey, boo, I saw the news. So sorry to hear about you and Leila, but you know she wasn’t good enough for you. When you need a shoulder to cry on, I’m here. I could come over tonight if you’d like.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I have us both on Google alerts, and yours pinged a minute ago with some sad pictures of Leila leaving. It makes sense you dumped her ass.”

“I didn’t dump her. Everything is fine with Leila.”

“Photos don’t lie, boo. I’ll be over in an hour.”

“Don’t come here. I won’t let you in.”

Candy tries to say something more, but I hang up on her. Like he planned it, Randy is calling me the second I pull the phone from my ear.

“I knew this would happen!” he says. “Are you ready to date Candy? We can give it a week, but I think it would make the perfect story. You broke it off with Leila because you realized your feelings for Candy. Even better than what I originally planned for you!”

“Why does everyone think Leila and I are broken up? The tabloids say whatever they want. This morning has been taken out of context.”

“Come on, Spencer. Listen to me. Let’s do this. Think of the possibilities!”

I roll my eyes. “Randy, can you please set up some auditions for me this week?”

He huffs. “Yeah, I’ll get on that. I’ll email you the details. Think about what I said.”

He hangs up before I can say it’ll never happen, and I throw my phone onto the couch. The thing is almost dead, anyway, and it’s not like anyone important will contact me.

Leila won’t be calling or texting today. If she ever does it again. I might’ve royally screwed this up. Why didn’t I stick with the original plan of just being out in public? Leila seems like the type who needs to take things slow, and I decided to trudge ahead like a bull in a china shop.

I swore to Candy and Randy that everything is okay, but I’m not honestly sure.

Are Leila and I done for good?

Chapter Twenty-One – Leila

I unlock the Frills West studio door and head inside the cool building. Clementine has a habit of leaving the AC on full blast when she leaves on Friday nights, and since I wasn’t in the office last week to turn it down due to working on the coffee shop design, it’s basically freezing in here. Normally, I get annoyed, but today, I appreciate the frigid air.

I immediately sit at my desk and pull out my laptop. It’s time to order the new tables for the coffee shop and have them sent to an art studio I found for individualization. As I scroll through the options that the owner said I could pick from, I struggle to concentrate.

My mind always falls back on Spencer and what happened Saturday night and yesterday morning. I was too harsh on him. I know I was. The cameras don’t bother me that much, and I told my friends to stop sending me the articles, so I won’t have them blowing up my phone. It was just an excuse to run away because I’m scared of how I feel for Spencer.

I can be unfortunately self-aware, which is both a blessing and a curse.

“Girl, I heard about you and Spencer; how are you feeling?” Clementine says as she enters. She throws the magazine on the desk in front of me, open to a picture of my crying face.

“This photo was out of context. Spencer and I are fine. Those camera people caught me off guard, and that’s why I was so upset.”

Clementine blows out a breath. “That’s far less exciting than I was hoping for. I thought for sure you two had a massive blowout at his mansion. You were leaving in the same dress you wore to the premier on Saturday. Talk about a walk of shame!”

“I have no shame. Yes, I was wearing the same dress, but that’s because I didn’t have anything else to put on. I don’t see why you’re so interested in this.”
