I cleared my entire schedule to come to Spencer’s house today to start figuring out what I will do for him. He has given me literally no direction. I shouldn’t be surprised since I’m the one who pushed this whole thing on him. He had no plans for an interior designer, and I can’t expect him to have come up with ideas over the course of two weeks.

I planned this for Friday because we’re supposed to go out again tomorrow night to some event Spencer has to attend. If I were at work, I wouldn’t be doing anything because I’d be freaking out about date number three. Or is it technically only number two? The pool day didn’t feel like a part of our deal because we weren’t out in public. Someone took our photo when we parked at the liquor store, but that’s it.

As I put the key into the lock, my stomach flutters with excitement. You can tell so much about a person by the way they have their home decorated. I try to bring that out with every client I work with. Your house is an extension of you.

All those butterflies in my stomach drop to the floor the second I open the door.

It’s just so white. The walls are the brightest white I’ve ever seen, to the point where I have to avert my eyes. How can Spencer stand to live like this? I’d be wearing sunglasses inside all the time. It reminds me of walking outside after a snowstorm when the sun is reflecting off the fresh powder. Except that’s far more beautiful than whatever this mess is.

After my eyes adjust to the bright white, I realize there’s really not much else to notice. The door opens into a hallway with what I assume is the living room off to the left. The couch looks like nice leather, but it doesn’t match the recliner next to it, which is well-worn. That’s probably where Spencer sits to watch TV on the big screen mounted on the wall.

The only other furniture in the room is a coffee table covered in rings from various beverages. It looks like expensive, fine wood, and something I’d like to keep, though I’ll have it refinished, and I’ll need to make sure to include some coasters in my redesign.

Not that any light is needed with how bright the walls are, but the only fixture is attached to a ceiling fan hanging in the center of the room. The windows have no blinds or curtains, another thing I’ll have to plan for.

Across the hall is what I assume Spencer calls the ‘den,’ which appears to be used as storage. There are some boxes strewn around, but nothing else. I could make this into a game room or something. I’ll have to talk to Spencer about it. I’m not sure how often he hosts people here, but if he ever wants to, I can make this something worth visiting.

The dining room is more of the same. The table is oak with a beautiful finish and matching chairs, though this appears to be the only matching furniture set in the house.

Before starting in the kitchen, I take the stairs from the dining room up to the four bedrooms. Three of them are completely empty, while the last one must belong to Spencer. It has the biggest bathroom, complete with a huge tub and a glass-enclosed shower. His bed is a California King that could fit like six of my tiny mattresses. Still, though, there are no personal touches. No pictures on his nightstand, which has a charger for his phone and one for a smart watch. There isn’t even a TV in the bedroom, so I guess all he does in here is sleep.

Who is Spencer James? I thought I’d get a feel for him by walking around the house, but so far, that’s not the case. How am I supposed to redecorate a house that was never decorated in the first place?

Aside from the den, there are no boxes or anything, so I can’t even assume Spencer just moved in.

The only explanation here is that my fake boyfriend is boring.

I return downstairs feeling less hopeful than when I first walked in. There’s a half-bath down here, which I assume is for guests. I can’t believe each bedroom has a bathroom! One is another full bath, but two are actually only half, which is also surprising. What’s the point?

Nothing about this house makes sense, but I guess it’s my job to bring some coherence to the place.

It’s a tall order. I was expecting a guy’s house, but what I got is a place that looks like no one has lived in it for years.

The kitchen, at least, has modern appliances and a nice island with a black and white marble top. Finally, I feel like there’s a room I can work with. I start by measuring the empty walls because there aren’t many cabinets for a large kitchen, and I wouldn’t mind suggesting that Spencer add some.
