Suki: Ugh, of course not. Relationships start lots of different ways. If he wants more, he’ll want it whenever you guys have sex.

Mara: I know, but...I can’t help wanting to do this right. If I go in there wearing a tiny little dress and I’m digesting his jizz by midnight, will he take me seriously?

Suki: Who are you and what have you done with Mara? We wear what we want. We suck what we want. And we don’t slut shame.

Mara: Okay. You’re right. Just because he’s 46 doesn’t mean he’s old fashioned...right?

Suki: Right. It just means you might need to pump his dick up to get him hard.

Mara: This is serious, you wretched whore. And I can tell from his dick outline in his pants that he can get hard just fine.

Suki: Ew, what kind of pants is he wearing?

Mara: Irrelevant. I’m borrowing a dress from you.

Suki: Help yourself. Don’t leave cum stains on this one, please and thanks.

Mara: I told you it wasn’t a cum stain!

Suki: And I still don’t believe you.

Mara: Have you heard from Carter?

Suki: Just usual stuff about schedules and the girls.

Mara: You should text him a tit pic...

Suki: I think the fuck not.

Mara: He kissed you and bought you a Tiffany necklace! He def wants to take you to Bonetown.

Suki: If he does it’s because I’m the only woman he ever sees.

Mara: Bullshit! Pro athletes can get laid eight days a week if they want.

Suki: Maybe he’s getting laid on the road.

Mara: You should ask him.

I set my phone down, eating the rest of my sandwich. I’ve been thinking about the kiss nonstop since it happened the day before yesterday. Kisses like that happen in movies, but I’ve never had one in real life.

He actually picked me up, his hand squeezing my ass and my core pressing against his erection. That kiss was hotter than the quickies I used to have with Tyler. And honestly, every sexual encounter we had was a quickie.

If we’d been alone in the house, I wouldn’t have wanted to stop. That kiss made me feel like the most desirable woman in the world. But I’m already feeling a lot more for Carter than I expected, and sex would complicate things even more.

Tyler left me feeling broken and used. I made a promise to myself that I’d never feel that way again. And this arrangement with Carter is temporary. It’s also not just me and him. The girls are part of it. I’ve noticed the way he looks at me sometimes when I’m with the girls.

He likes how much I love them, and vice versa. But that’s not enough to make jumping into bed together a good idea. Staying with me after the year is up would be ideal for Carter because I’d take care of the girls and he’d still be gone a lot of the time. He could fuck around with women and have the best of all worlds.

I’m not doing that.

I crumple up the wrapper from my sandwich and stuff it into the bag, then check my phone again.

Mara: So you don’t want to ask him, just say that.

Suki: If I asked him, he’d say no and I wouldn’t believe him. He takes quick showers at home and has no time to stroke his salami in there. I seriously doubt he just has months’ worth of sperm backed up in his balls.

Mara: You can’t just never trust a man again because of Fuckface.

Suki: I can, though. I have to go get groceries, talk later.

Mara: OK.

Carter’s aunt Rosie flew in yesterday to spend a few days with us. She took the girls shopping for Christmas gifts today, and I’m using the time to run errands. We go through a lot of food with three growing girls and one growing pig.

I’m making beef stroganoff and homemade bread for dinner. Cooking a labor-intensive homemade meal and then cleaning the whole kitchen when I’m done is relaxing to me. I cook more when Carter is on the road, which is a change.

I used to prefer it when he was gone and it was just me and the girls. But now, I miss him when he’s on the road. I lie in bed at night watching his games on my phone and wondering what he’s doing afterward.

It’s not a good idea for me to start an actual relationship with Carter, but the thought of him with other women makes me die a little inside.

This is definitely a curveball I don’t know how to deal with. It snuck up on me, but I can’t deny it anymore.

I have a crush on my husband.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Carter

Bash passes me the puck and I make a slap shot toward the net, someone crashing into me and knocking me to the ice before I can see whether it made it in.
