“What?” I croaked out. “Why?”

“Last night on the phone she asked me if I thought she had put on some weight. Which is crazy. Clare has an amazing body.” She looked at me. “You’re a guy, do you think she has a nice body?”

My eyes jerked back over to Clare. She was wearing jeans and a light blue sweater. Her hair was pulled up into a high ponytail and she looked fucking amazing.

“Um, well, I mean, it’s Clare.”

“What does that mean?” Rory asked with a stern look on her face.

“That’s like asking me if I think you have a nice body.”

Rory laughed. “It is no such thing.”

I looked at my sister-in-law. “So, if I said I thought Clare had body men would love to get their hands on, you wouldn’t be mad?”

Rory tilted her head and regarded me. “If for any moment I thought you liked Clare, I would totally be okay with you thinking she’s hot. I mean, you can, of course, think she is without liking her, but I was just asking your thoughts.”

“Why do you think I don’t like Clare?”

“Well, for starters, you’ve done nothing but shoot daggers at her since she got here.”

I scoffed. “I have not. And for the record, I like her just fine. She’s…she’s…”

Letting my gaze drift her way once again, I had to keep from jumping up and hitting Alex. He had his hands on her. Well, he was brushing something off her face…but every guy knows that’s just the beginning.

“Yes?” Rory asked, following my gaze.

“She’s a friend.”

When I looked back down at Rory, she was smirking. “Wes, why did it look like you just wanted to rip Alex’s head off when he was wiping something off of Clare’s face?”

Laughing, I said, “Rory, you’re reading into things. I could not care less what Alex does to Clare.”

“Right, if you say so,” Rory replied with a smile.

We spent the next few minutes gluing in silence while I did my best not to look over at Clare and Alex.

What in the hell was wrong with me? What did I care if Alex and Clare went out. I had my own plans, and that included winning Mandy back and breaking up her wedding.

My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I pulled it out. Smiling when I saw the name, I opened the text.

Mandy: What were the flowers for?

Okay, that wasn’t the response I was hoping for.

Me: Just thought it would be nice to send them to you, you know after seeing you the other day.

Mandy: I appreciate it, Wes, but please don’t send me flowers. Ron was there when they were delivered to the restaurant. He questioned who the flowers were from.

Me: I’m sorry, Mandy. I only sent them as a friend, that’s all.

I waited for her reply to come through, but nothing came. I slipped the phone back into my pocket, sighed, and reached for my beer. That’s when I noticed Alex was putting on his coat. Clare was standing at the front door with Finn. She handed a phone back to him and he grinned as he read something on it. He leaned down and they hugged quickly before Clare took a step back. Finn opened the door and Alex called out to everyone and said his goodbyes.

“Thanks so much for letting me join in!”

Goodbyes and see you around were said, and Clare waved goodbye. When the door shut, she had a smile on her face I hadn’t ever seen before. Something inside of me twisted with jealousy.

“Wes?”

I snapped my head back to Harmony, who was standing there. “Yeah?”

“Would you mind helping Clare with her decorations. I think she and Alex spent more time talking then they did making anything.”

Every part of me screamed to say no. Instead, I nodded and headed over to the table where Clare was. She was making the centerpieces for the tables.

I walked up and set my beer down on the table harder than necessary and Clare jumped.

“For fuck’s sake, Wes. You scared the shit out of me.”

Shrugging, I sighed and sat down. “I’ve been told to come over and help you since you and pretty boy were slacking off.”

Her head drew back in surprise. “Pretty boy?”

“What do you need me to do?” I asked.

After explaining how she wanted the candle sticks wrapped with this berry vine shit, she sat back down.

“Are you going out with him?”

Clare was wrapping one of the candle sticks and didn’t bother to look at me. “Who?”

I rolled my eyes. “Alex.”

Her gaze met mine. “You mean…pretty boy?”

I shot her a dirty look.

“I don’t know, maybe. Probably.”

Feeling annoyed, I asked, “Which is it? Maybe or probably?”

Clare looked up, and if looks could kill, I would have been dead on the spot. “Probably. He was nice, didn’t act like an asshole, and said nice things to me.”
