Oliver circles my entrance with two fingers and lifts his head. “Please what?”

I lift my hips, searching for those fingers, for— “More.”

He plunges two fingers inside me. My body clenches around them, and I moan. “I could stay here all night and watch you fuck my fingers with that pretty pussy.”

“I need . . .” I circle my hips, desperate, hungry. “Oliver.”

He grunts in approval and dips his head, his mouth on my clit, curls those fingers, and finds that perfect spot. My hips jerk. My body clenches and releases in a violent wave.

I’m still shaking as he backs away and leads me off the vanity. He looks me over in nothing but my heels and scrubs a hand over his face. “Shit, Savvy . . .”

The doorbell rings, and it’s like I’m snapped from a dream.

I’m supposed to be pretending to be Alec’s. This ring on my finger is supposed to be real. And I just let Oliver . . .

“That was a mistake,” I say in a rush, and my body and heart scream in protest. The only moment with Oliver that ever felt like a mistake was the one where I walked out on him. But the last thing I want to do is embarrass Alec. I promised. “Oliver, please don’t tell anyone. If the family finds out . . .”

“I see.” Oliver’s face is a mask of indifference, but I see the hurt in his gray eyes. “Still your dirty little secret.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

ALEC

Savvy’s distracted and upset on the drive to the wedding, and I’m pretty sure it’s not just work-related.

Derek McCoy, the douchey husband of The Rage CEO, contacted me to let me know Savvy turned down an opportunity for a second interview during a weekend away with them at their vineyard. He was disappointed and wanted to be sure I, as her future husband, was aware of the opportunity she was throwing away.

I didn’t reply. Mostly because no matter what Savvy’s reasons were, letting this guy know that he’s a misogynistic piece of shit isn’t going to do her any favors in her industry.

When I picked her up from her place to drive to the wedding, she could barely look at me. I keep checking her hand to make sure my ring is still there because I’m so convinced that any minute now, she’s going to take it off and tell me she can’t pretend anymore.

Sure enough, by the time I park at The Orchid, she’s staring at it as if agreeing to this ruse is the biggest mistake she’s ever made. “Alec—”

“I know that you turned down the next interview with The Rage.”

Her head snaps up. “You do?”

“Yeah.” I clear my throat. “I hope it wasn’t because of anything I’ve—”

“No.” She shakes her head. “I decided I didn’t want to play by their rules. I knew you’d come with me if that was what I wanted, but I realized it wasn’t. I don’t like the way they run their business, and I don’t like the way they make me feel.”

I swallow. “If you’re sure.”

“I am.” She gives me a sad smile. “It works out better this way anyway—no more awkward pretending.”

I cringe. “I am so sorry about last night. It’s no excuse for pushing the way I did, but grief is a funny thing, and it makes us cling to whatever remnants of the person we have left.”

“I’m sure it was hard to hear me tell you that when you know how I feel.”

I close my eyes. It’s how she doesn’t feel that’s the problem. “I just need you to get through tonight. Mom invited Portentia after all, and as ridiculous as it sounds, I don’t think I can endure this without you.”

“You won’t have to,” she says, squeezing my hand on the console.

“Then why do you look so wrecked?”

When she blinks up at me, there are tears in her lashes. “Oliver came over earlier, and . . . things happened.”

Why are those words like a knife in the heart? I clench my jaw. “Of course he did.”

She puts a hand on my arm. “I didn’t tell him that this isn’t real, but he suspects. I wonder if maybe keeping the truth from him is worse. After what happened with him and Portentia—”

“You mean after he seduced the woman I planned to marry?”

She flinches. “Maybe it would be better if we told him it’s not real. Otherwise, he’s walking around thinking I cheated on you with him.”

I cough out a dry laugh. “Are you worried he’s going to feel guilty? Because trust me, Savvy, Oliver doesn’t do guilt. He’s conniving and manipulative and—” I smack the steering wheel. The idea of his hands on her makes me want to tear my hair out. “You know all this. How could you let him touch you anyway?”
