“No moves until I’ve gotten May under my roof, understood?” he growls as we get into the SUV.

“Yes, Dario.”

I climb into the driver’s seat and head out to the diner so Dario can speak to his woman. What I’d prefer to do is question her ass all about her friend, learn everything about her, every like and dislike, find every ex-boyfriend and lover so I could fucking kill them.

Yes, I’m a damn crazy bastard, but that’s why I’m Dario’s enforcer. I snap necks, slice up bodies, and end lives when necessary, so it’s not like I wouldn’t do it for my January.

I’m practically twitching when I get back to the estate. Sleep sure as fuck doesn’t come as I hit up Dario for the file he has on January.

I know he’s done his research on all May’s acquaintances and I’m not wrong. Smirking, he hands it over, but not without a warning. “It’s not a lot, but if you’re like me, you’re not going to like it. Read up, and behave. I’m getting my woman tomorrow night.”

“Thanks. I’ll be grabbing mine as well.”

“Good.” An hour later, I’ve read all they had on her. She’s twenty-two and is working as an intern at a news station that broadcasts nationally. She’s brilliant having gotten straight A’s in high school and in college.

She went to community college. Her bank account is pretty empty and her credit is basic. Other than one giant student loan, she doesn’t have anything on here. Her parents are on here with enough money to pay her tuition which isn’t a lot, but it looks like they cut her off for some reason. I’m not sure why, but they could have helped with community college for sure. Fucking cunts.

Before the internship, she worked at a grocery store since she was sixteen. Damn, the girl is used to hard work and dedication. I stare at the photo I stole from Johnson’s apartment and the candid ones the men had gotten from the surveillance.

She’s so fucking beautiful. Her long amber reddish hair is in a messy bun with loose stands being blown by the wind in two pictures. I want to wrap it up in my fist and bring her face to mine, dragging her lips close so I can kiss them and taste their pillowy softness.

The more I stare at the photos the more jealous I get. It’s a little too fucking much and that pisses me off. Why? I don’t know. It’s not like it’s truly personal, but it’s not their right to have my woman’s information. Still, it gives me what I need to make it through the next twenty-four hours.

Chapter Two

January

The alarm on my phone goes off way earlier than I’d like for the trip I dread. Shutting it off, I see a message from Jason.

Problems at home. Need to have a late start. Meet me at the station by six.

Something’s weird. He never lets his family life get in the way, like ever.

I switch my alarm time and give myself another hour of sleep. Unfortunately, sleep doesn’t come. A certain person pops in my head.

As I was coming home from work yesterday, there were two men getting into a vehicle; one of them had exited our apartment building, but it wasn’t him who caught my attention. His buddy that stood by the vehicle drew my notice. I stayed out of view, but I couldn’t hide the way my body shivered from his brutish appearance.

Six foot seven, and a wide frame full of muscles packed in a well-tailored suit. My mouth salivated as he pushed off the vehicle, lowered his sunglasses, peering around to check out the area. He didn’t notice me in my usual hiding spot that I use when Randall—the sicko—Johnson comes creeping out of his apartment, waiting for one of us girls to appear. This man can bump into me, stalk me all he wants, although I bet he didn’t even know I existed.

I stared at his facial hair and wondered what it would feel like to touch it. Then again, he looked like the kind of guy who didn’t let strangers get close to him. Hell, I bet people he knew didn’t get too close either. My eyes moved to his hands. He wasn’t wearing any jewelry except for a watch, but from that distance I couldn’t make out the type of timepiece.

Would he come back here? What if he stops by here this afternoon like the day before and I’m not here? Why do I care?

By the time I run through all the reasons and a dozen other questions, my alarm goes off again. “Damn it. It’s time to get ready,” I mutter, tossing off the sheet. Once I’m done getting dressed, I gather my things to take the train to the station. With everything ready, I get my coffee and in walks May, shocked.
