“It’s just… I’m not exciting anymore, and you’re working with…” He started working with a female on the team and I can’t take it. It’s been bothering me more and more even though they don’t actually work together at all. She’s just one of many I can’t help the pettiness in me.

“Is this about the damn movie I saw you watching the other day?” I hadn’t thought about it, but I guess I let it get to my head.

“I don’t know… Maybe.”

“Sweetheart. Listen, I find you exciting by just existing. Every time I come home, it’s a balm to my soul. For years I’ve done fucked-up shit and never cared about it and frankly still don’t. I can do all that and not think twice, but I come home and I see you and that beautiful family you’ve given me, and it just makes me feel alive. You’re the surprise I didn’t know I wanted. You caught me off guard from the start, and even when you kicked me in the balls, I knew that you were going to be mine.”

I let out the smallest giggle. “You’re insane.”

“That’s a fucking given, but that doesn’t change that I kidnapped you and made you mine, and I’m never letting you go. Remember, I fucking tossed you into the trunk once, woman. I’m not above showing that I’m keeping you any way I can.”

“I have no intention of ever leaving you. I’m afraid you don’t want me.”

“Fuck, January. I’ll always want you. That’s a given, so enough with not being adventurous for me. Are you bored?”

“No, I’m happy with my life…too happy.”

“Are you scared?”

“Maybe.”

He wraps me up in his arms and holds me tightly. “January, when you were just becoming an adult and thought everything was good, your parents pulled the rug from right under you. Now you think I’ll do that to you, right?”

“Maybe.”

“I won’t let you down. I love you and plan on expanding our little family.”

“We’ve been married for ten years and have three children, one who is worse than both of us combined.”

“Yes, but I think I just sealed it with baby number four.”

“It doesn’t work like that?”

“Well, I’m going to keep trying. If not, we have a wonderful life even if we have a little psycho on our hands.”

Hellion’s eighteen birthday

Enrico

Vivian comes racing through the front door pissed as hell. A part of me doesn’t blame her because she’s a fucking boss in her own right, but she pushed the wrong motherfuckers buttons and she’s lucky that he finds her fascinating. Of all my children, she’s the only one to give me a hard time and the only one to give me gray hair.

“What’s going on?”

“I hate him,” she hisses. “I’m going to kill him. I don’t care what anyone says. Capo or not.”

“Who sweetheart?” January asks my hell’s angel.

“Mateo,” I say, coming into the house after her. Dario’s eldest son and now the head of the Conti Crime Family since Dario retired.

“What happened?” January asks again getting more and more anxious.

Vivian throws her hands up. “He’s an asshole is what he is and you’re no better.” She points right at me.

“Little girl, I’d watch it or you’ll be in trouble,” my wife scolds her, but there’s no contrition on my daughter’s face. She couldn’t care less about anything right now.

“I’m already sentenced to a fate worse than death anyway, so whatever.” She throws her hands up. I never expected overly dramatic to be a trait that Vivian possessed, but I suppose that’s a new one.

“Make sure she doesn’t leave her room,” I say to a few guards nearby. “And don’t stand too close. She’s feeling a bit testy and so is Mateo.”

“What happened, damn it?” January hisses.

I slide my arm around her waist, knowing this is going to set her off and I’m going to get an earful. “They’re getting married.”

She leans back and glares at me. “Who? Vivian and Mateo?”

“Yes. Tomorrow.”

“What? Why?” She tries to pull out of my arms, but I hold her tight.

“Because he wants payment for her transgressions, and I think she’ll finally learn how to behave before she ends up in prison or dead.”

Resignation strikes her like it did me. We knew Vivian was going to be a handful, but now she’ll be Mateo’s problem. At least he loves her even though he wants to wring her neck like we do. I received his word that he’d never harm my baby girl and that’s all I need.

“We’re all in for a world of hell soon.” She presses her head to my chest and sighs. “There goes the party for tonight.”

“The hell it does,” Mateo says, walking into our home uninvited. I’m still pissed about his actions with my baby girl, but if there’s anyone who can tame that child it’s him.

He’s got a lot of his father in him and some of his grandfather as well. Crazy as fuck. “Where is my devil bride?”
