“The ex. Makayla’s ex. He and the neighbor. They’re having an affair. They’re both behind this.” I swear to God, if they’ve harmed a hair on her head, they’re both fucking dead.

“Ben, I need you to calm—”

“No! I need you to call this in. She’s in danger, Steve.” I spit off the address where Jenny—fuck, Rebecca, is staying. “I’m headed there now.”

“Ben, listen to me. Don’t do anything stupid. You know better. Wait for me. I’m about seven minutes away from there.”

He’s out of his mind if he thinks I’m going to sit here while those pieces of shit could be doing something horrible to my girl. I don’t even respond before ending the call. I slam on the gas, weaving in and out of traffic. The light turns red, and I blow through it, almost hitting a couple entering the crosswalk. This is all my fault. I should have called it in immediately. I sat on this information when I knew. I’m never wrong.

“Fuck!” I slam my fist into the steering wheel. If anything happens to her, it’s going to be my fault. I promised to protect her. Instead, I allowed two monsters to get to her.

It feels like an eternity before I pull up to the house. Steve is already standing in the front yard, talking to a man in a suit. I throw my Jeep into park and jump out. “Is she in there?” I jog up to Steve.

“Ben, hold up. This is Christopher Fischer. He says—”

All I see is red. “You son of a bitch.” I cock my fist back and punch him in the face. Caught off guard, he grabs at his nose, and I swing again. He stumbles back, and I push him, wrestling him to the ground. “Where the fuck is she, you motherfucker!”

“Ben!”

“Where is she!”

“Get off me, you crazy asshole!”

I rear my fist back again. “Fuck you.” Blood splatters from his nose. “If you hurt her, you’re as good as dead—”

He finally retaliates, taking a swing at me. I barely feel it, my adrenaline is pumping so fast.

“Ben, enough.” Steve grabs under my arms and rips me off him.

“Let me go.” I push him off and go back for more.

“Ben! Enough!” Steve gets between us and shoves me away. “I said stop.”

“I won’t until this asshole tells me where she is. Where’s your accomplice? Huh? She inside?” I turn and walk toward the house.

“Ben, she’s not in there.” I stop and turn to Steve. “As far as we know, no one is in the house. We have to wait for a team to get here.”

“I’m not fucking waiting—”

“If we don’t, nothing will be admissible in court.”

“Fuck court! She could be hurt. Or worse—” I can’t even finish that thought. I look at her piece of shit ex and want to break his nose all over again. He gathers himself and stands, wiping his mouth.

“I’m here looking for my wife.” His comment enrages me. I go after him, and Steve blocks me.

“She ain’t your wife, asshole.” My fists shake, wanting to knock his ass out for daring to call her that.

“Excuse me, but who are you—aside from getting sued out the ass for assault?”

Steve grabs my arm. I’m seconds away from knocking Steve out just to get to this schmuck. “I’m her boyfriend, asshole. The man who’s gonna fight for her—unlike you.”

His eyes become wide. “She’s. . . with you?”

“Yeah. Call her your wife again, and I’ll bust your jaw open. Where the fuck is she? I know you two have her.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about. I came out here to talk to Makayla because I was worried about her. She wouldn’t return my calls. Her lawyer couldn’t convince her to speak to me, so I had to take matters into my own hands. Little did I know, my wife was dating a psychopath—take one more step, and I’m pressing charges.” He looks to Steve. “You saw everything he did.”

Like Steve would turn me in. I dismiss this asshole and turn my attention to Steve. “How do you know she’s not in there? He tell you? He’s part of this—”

“Part of what? I’m here because I’m concerned for her.”

I scoff at him. “Seriously? You and your girlfriend tried to kill her—”

His hands go up in surrender. “Whoa. I would never do anything to harm Mak. I love her—”

“I’m done hearing her name out of your mouth.”

“She’s my wife—”

“She’s nothing to you! I warned you about calling her that again—”

“Neither of you is helping Makayla. We need to figure out where she is and who has her.”

“Ask him.”

“I thought she was here. I’m not going to keep repeating myself—you know what? I’ll just have a conversation with the local police. Non-corrupt ones.” He turns and walks away.

“Where’s Rebecca?” I call out. He stalls in his step and slowly turns.
