I have to remember to thank dad. He didn’t even let on when I went downstairs to talk to him earlier. He must’ve picked up on my nervousness and decided to take it easy on me. I’d like to know what he’d said to her dad to make him give in so easily though.

Whatever it was I’m grateful. Now I have to keep my promise to her, her parents and my own. When I spoke to dad this morning he had only one question. Was I sure? After I gave him all the reasons why I was one hundred percent sure, he’d given me his blessings.

“You happy?”

“I’ll be happy when I see my ring which everyone else in the universe has already seen but me.” She tried tugging her hand away with her cuteness.

“Don’t you play the Hollywood diva with me brat. Or I’ll make you wait much longer than I’d originally planned.”

She gave me this look and I almost ran off the road. I know exactly what our daughter is going to look like. Oh shit! I looked back at her almost in awe and she grinned, having no idea what had just happened.

Oh shit, this is really happening, how is this happening? I’m only giving him shit to quell the butterflies in my stomach, but it wasn’t working. I was still fighting hard not to cry like my mom had been when she came back from seeing the ring, my ring.

She'd whispered how perfect it was to me, only making me more anxious to see it. Now, this boy was playing around. It didn't matter to me anyway what the ring looked like. As long as it meant he was mine for always, it could be made out of twine for all I care.

I was so happy I was practically vibrating in my seat. I didn’t have the ring and he hadn’t officially asked yet but I knew it was only a matter of time, and I wanted to tell the girls as soon as possible.

And to think I’d been so excited the night before when dad told me Jace had asked his permission for me to go to the island. Dad was playing it off this morning, but he was more excited than I was to get that text message.

I'd had to remind him that Jace was an almost eighteen-year-old boy while he was a grown man. The look he'd given me said it all. Jace might be young, but he owned practically all this shit.

That’s the thing about the Saunders family and this town. Everyone here knows that whatever Jace does, his mom and dad stand behind him one hundred percent.

I don’t remember a time when the two weren’t interchangeable. Like no one has ever said to Jace, no you can't that's only for your mom or dad, or anything along those lines. It’s only because Jace wasn’t one to throw his weight around, that it was easy to forget who and what he is.

That's why it had been so scary when he started dating Mandy. Her already big head only got that much bigger and I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one planning an escape route if she happened to be right, that Jace and she were going to eventually get married.

And then almost overnight it was over as soon as it began. Everyone was on tenterhooks back then, because Mandy became even more of a demon wench than the norm. For weeks the whole school was like an army camp and it was hell going there.

But Jared and Sian came and things changed again, only for the better this time. No one could've seen the changes coming, least of all me. Nothing had turned out the way I'd expected, especially when it came to the new jock.

The jock I was sure was going to become part of the popular crowd and crap all over Tammy and I like all the rest of idiots.

I looked at that jock now and my heart was so full, that sometimes it was hard to believe that it was mine. That the same heart that used to beat with anxiety on mornings like this was now overly excited to face the day.

I squeezed his hand and scooted over to rest my head on his shoulder. He kissed my hair and went back to watching the road. “Don’t worry, I’m going to give you your ring really soon. I just have to get some things together first and we’d be good to go.”

“Can’t I just take a peek at it?” I knew for sure my pout would work but I thought better of using it while he was driving.

“Behave brat.” I don’t know why being called a brat should make me feel so warm and tingly but that it did.
