Vincent comes up to Zach and me and kisses me on the cheek, congratulating us on our engagement. “You know, I’d really like you to have that place in Rum. As you know, I’ve never been there. And you began there. It’s right that you should have it.”
“You can’t gift us a house,” Zach says. “It’s…weird.”
“Okay,” he replies. “Then you can give me some advice later in exchange. There’s a couple of business issues I’m having a little problem with. Wouldn’t mind your and Nathan’s take. Then you can take the house in return. If you don’t, I’ll only deliberately lose it in my next poker tournament.”
“We’ll take it,” I say. “You never know—we might retire there.”
Zach laughs. “If you say so. And I can chase you around the kitchen with a tea towel, complaining about the dog.”
“I can think of worse things,” I say. I already know growing old with Zach will be the best future I can possibly hope for. He might hate being a doctor, but he’s brought me back to life. I’m better with him, and what’s wonderful is that I know he’s better with me, too. Neither of us are perfect, but we fit perfectly together.
