I tucked a loose strand of hair around her ear. “At the moment, I think we’re both doing what’s best for right now. Do I think if we’re together down the road, we’ll still be sneaking into each other’s houses? No, I don’t. I think we need to cross that bridge when we come to it unless you’re unhappy right now. Are you?”

She shook her head. “No. Right now I’m the opposite of unhappy.”

I wasn’t sure if she was trying to be funny or whether she had an issue with allowing herself to say she was happy. Maybe she was afraid of being happy. Given the way she grew up, it would be completely understandable.

“We should get away,” I said. “Norfolk was great. We could relax and not worry too much about who was watching.”

“Where were you thinking?”

“How about the Cotswolds? Or Bath?”

“Bath is further away. We’re less likely to see someone we know.”

“Okay, next time we both have two days off at the same time, we’ll go to Bath. How does that sound?”

“I feel a lot better. It’s like you can see inside my head sometimes.” I felt exactly the same about her.

“That’ll be the CAT scan I did in your sleep the other night.”

“I’m sorry for freaking out. There’s just so much at stake,” she said. We both had a lot to lose, but I was beginning to realize Sutton was braced for a fight all the time. It was almost as if she was expecting things to go wrong.

“Don’t ever apologize. You’ve worked hard to get where you are. Of course you want to protect that.”

The look of doubt had gone and I had smiley Sutton back in my arms. “I mean it, you always know the exact right thing to say to me.”

“It’s easy when you tell me what you’re thinking.”

“You don’t want to know what I’m thinking right now,” she said, smoothing her hands over my chest. Her tongue darted out to wet her lips.

“You should know you’re an open book. Don’t take up poker.”

She leaned forward, pressing a kiss against my neck. “Shall we take a shower?”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Here?” Her shower was only just big enough for me on a good day. There’s no way we’d both fit.

She twisted her hips, grinding herself against my crotch.

“I think right here will do,” I growled, before flipping her to her back and crawling over her. I was already hard. My erection pressed against my fly, eager to move things along. “You’re so sexy.”

“Do you mean sweaty? Even though my run was more of a walk, I’m still pretty gross.”

She couldn’t be gross if she tried.

I pressed a kiss to her neck then ran my teeth over her skin. I wanted to devour her. I’d never craved someone like I craved Sutton. With her, it was a physical need, but it was also more. I wanted to know every thought she was having, take away every drop of self-doubt, heal every wound.

She wiggled her hips underneath me, impatient.

“I can get you sweatier than a run.” I cupped her breasts and smoothed my hand over her stomach. “I can get you panting, desperate to catch your breath.” I slid my hand down the inside of her Lycra trousers, wanting to feel her heat, her impatience, the wetness that was just for me. My fingers found her clit and I slid through her slick folds as she gasped. Like it was a shock how good I felt despite the fact we knew it was always good. So good.

“Jacob, more,” she cried. I caught the plea in my mouth, kissing her roughly. I wanted to show her that the doubt and anxiety about us was misplaced because we had this. This connection that was physical and mental and completely unquenchable.

She began to grind against my hand but I wasn’t going to let her come like that. No, not after our conversation tonight. I wanted to be inside her, as close as possible when she came each and every time tonight. I withdrew my hand and stood, pulling her onto her feet and bending her over the bed. Before her hands hit the mattress, I yanked down her leggings to her knees and undid my trousers. I wasn’t prepared to wait for us to undress. I was impatient to be inside her. I wanted to make her come, to explain in more than words why we’d overcome any obstacle that came our way.

I rammed into her, pulling her hips back against me, in a movement so sharp and sudden, she lost balance. But I had her. My grip around her was solid, my fingers pressed firm into her flesh. I slammed into her again and she reached around for I don’t know what. She needed to understand that I had this for both of us.
