“It’s great being here. With you. I don’t think I ever want to go home.”

He holds my stare and neither of us says anything, because we both know our lives are supposed to take us in opposite directions. But just now, there’s something in me gathering speed to change course. Does he feel it too?

“Take me to bed, Beau Cove,” I whisper.

“Thank god Mum’s got me sleeping outside,” he says, “because Vivian Cross, I’m going to make you sing all night.”

Again, I think.

TWENTY-FOUR

Beau

We get back into my bedroom, and Vivian is tugging at my shirt before the door’s closed. I spin her around and press my body against hers, cupping her chin and sliding my tongue between her lips.

I pull back. “Watching you play that guitar.” I shake my head because it’s difficult to describe how much I loved watching her play. She looked so comfortable and at home, and the fact that she looked like that, in a place I call home, surrounded by my family… I’ve never felt anything like it. “It was wonderful. I can tell how much you love it.”

She beams up at me and sweeps her fingers over my cheekbones. “I had a really good time tonight. Your family…” She shrugs.

“What?” I ask, my eyebrows pinching together.

“You make sense, now I’ve spent some time with them.”

“I do?” I ask.

“You do. They’re…really quite something.”

“You’re really quite something.” I hook my fingers under her t-shirt and sweep it up over her head, then smooth my hands down her back. Her skin is like her voice, creamy and soft as velvet.

We undress between kisses. There’s less speed, less need to take everything all at once. There’s an unspoken agreement between us: We want to take our time. Linger in all the right places.

Once we’re both entirely naked, I lay her down on the bed and lie beside her, on my side, my head propped up on my hand. My view is spectacular. I smooth my hand over her stomach, cupping her breasts, pinching her nipples between my thumb and forefinger.

“Did you always know you wanted to be a singer?” I ask.

“Pretty much,” she replies. “Or involved in music in some way. I grew up around it. It’s in my blood.”

“Like me and medicine, I suppose. We both found our calling early.” I’m talking to myself but to her as well. It’s like the barrier between my words and thoughts has completely broken down. I don’t have to filter anything for her.

“You said you were at a crossroads. You think medicine is your future?”

I roll on top of her and press a kiss to her neck. “I enjoy being a doctor so I can’t imagine medicine not being in my life. I’ve just got to figure out how.”

“Well, I can confirm you have a good grasp of female anatomy,” she says on a laugh, and I can’t help but enjoy her happiness. It’s like I can feel everything she feels and I want her to feel nothing but joy.

“Oh yeah?” I ask. “Maybe I need to brush up on one or two things.” I crawl down her body, pressing my lips against her warm, soft skin, stroking, licking, claiming her for myself.

She’s mine. She’s mine. She’s mine.

I’ve never felt like a woman belonged to me the way I do with Vivian. Is it some kind of Neanderthal instinct that gets released after the kind of sexual connection we have?

Vivian’s fingers in my hair make me groan against her skin and she writhes underneath me. “Beau,” she whispers. “Beau, please. I need you.”

“You need me?” I crawl up her body and reach for a condom, our gazes still locked. “Tell me again.”

“I need you…inside me. Please.”

I groan at the longing in her tone. The begging she said she would never do.

We don’t look away as I plunge into her. I’m not sure how it’s possible, but somehow it feels even better than last night. It’s like the connection we created then has strengthened and somehow magnified. I feel so close to her—not just physically but mentally.

I piston my hips and she wraps her legs around me, like she wants to get closer. I dip my head, trying to block out as many sensations as I can. I’ve never felt so much all at once.

The idea that she might be feeling a fraction toward me as I’m feeling toward her is mind-blowing to me.

“Vivian,” I mutter against her skin. “Vivian, Vivian, Vivian.”

She shifts underneath me and I lean back slightly, lifting her leg and draping her ankle against my shoulder. We both groan at the change in angle.

I keep pushing into her, wondering if anything will feel this good again.

“There,” she gasps. “Oh god.”

“You feel so fucking good, Vivian. So fucking tight.” The start of my orgasm bellows in the distance and I can barely think, my blood pounding in my ears. “You. Are. So. Fucking. Special.”
