Hammer’s lips stretched. “Right! I forgot to tell you that you’re a damn good shot. That was a real clean job.”

Light erupted in Dex’s eyes like fireworks, and it was kind of cute how eager he was for the praise. “Thanks! I practice a lot. Shooting is one of the things that gets me really focused when I’m in the moment. I can just…” He pointed a finger gun made out of his bloodied gloves at the door and squinted with one eye. “And bam! I like the thrill of the shot itself. It goes through my whole body, and I feel something, you know?”

Hammer stared at him. Dex had just described his own feelings. In a world of mediocrity, violence and sex were the beacons of something worth the time and effort. Maybe that was why Dex didn’t fear Hammer and why he was so cool with everything that had happened since the abduction? This kid experienced very little fear in situations that would make most people freak out. Dex might not be the most self-aware of people, or the smartest for that matter, but while he didn’t seem to understand what he was conveying, he did offer Hammer raw access to his thought process, and Hammer could chew through it on his own.

Dex’s grin became a bit sheepish. “I think that’s also why I like extreme sex. It’s such a turn-on when I have adrenaline pumping through my veins. If sex is average, I start to space out, think about my next meal, or the next hook-up really, even when it feels good on the whole. But you?” Dex bit his lip. “You are savage, man. I wasn’t sure where the floor and where the ceiling were half the time.”

Hammer put more meat into the grinder. What man didn’t like to have his bedroom performance complimented? Yet he’d already told Dex that they wouldn’t be doing that anymore, so what was this segway? Did Dex simply say whatever came to his mind, without regard to whether it was appropriate, or was this an attempt to make Hammer think about their rough tumble again?

“We shouldn’t get back to this.”

The souring expression on Dex’s face told Hammer that it had been the latter. “I’m just saying. Was that a first time for you with a guy? Nothing wrong with exploring things you might enjoy.”

“I already did. Don’t want to do it again. Let’s just forget this and get back to work,” Hammer said and pushed more meat into the grinder, wishing for the roar of the machine to mute the kid.

Dex spread his arms, looking aggressive with that cleaver in his hand. “Something wrong with me?”

Hammer frowned. “You’re not entitled to my dick.”

When Dex opened his mouth, Hammer turned on the machine, and enjoyed the expression of fury on that pouty face. Dex needed to learn his place.

The kid turned to the body with stiff shoulders and carved off the corpse’s dick and balls in jerky movements. He then grabbed the soft bits and added them to the bowl next to the meat grinder without even looking at Hammer.

“You removed that one guy’s pacemaker?” Hammer asked without missing a beat. He was not going to acknowledge such childish behavior.

Dex gripped the table, taking several deep breaths. “No. I forgot, okay? You happy?” He turned to the tools hanging on the wall and grabbed a knife.

Hammer rubbed his forehead. “I am not trying to offend you. I just don’t want to fuck a guy. Why is that so hard to accept? You clearly don’t have issues finding partners.”

Dex pointed at him with the blade. “Because I don’t get it! You seemed happy enough two hours ago, and it’s not like I’ll be telling anyone about what we did. It was good, so fucking good. I can find hundreds of lukewarm meatsacks with half-hard dicks, but a guy like you is a wolf among sheep. Excuse me for being annoyed! You didn’t even let me kiss you! And it pisses me off even more that I’m complimenting you right now. Fuck you.” He shook his head and turned his violent energy to the scar on the cadaver’s chest.

Hammer exhaled, shaking his head. Dex needed more practice when it came to self-regulation. “Kinda stupid of this guy to come here, if he had health issues. What if he had a heart attack?” he said, again trying to divert the conversation.

Dex stilled, but it was good to see a little smile on his face again. He rubbed his chin with the top of his hand, leaving a smear of blood. “If he had a heart attack on the way, maybe he’d have survived.”

“Instead, he had to confront Dex’s gun. Chances of survival—minimal,” Hammer said with a grin, and when the boy’s face relaxed, he followed it up with, “you know, I watched this show where a guy burned a body in the incinerator, and a screw the victim had in his bones remained intact even after the cremation. Maybe we should check the rest of the meat before we risk the grinder getting stuck on something? I’m pretty sure Cora might have some old metal detector lying around.”
