“Mark?”
“What is it, baby?”
“You know it wasn’t all pretend, don’t you?”
“Of course, babe. If it was, the fault would be mine, not yours.” Now, this is the Mark I know. He’s always said the sweetest things to me but somehow his tone had changed.
“So, did you never enjoy sex with me?”
“What kind of question is that? I’ve loved every time we made love, and now I love fucking you. I guess it’s good that you came out of your shell now that the kids are out of the house; you’re a screamer.”
“Oh my goodness.” I buried my face in his chest, and he kissed my hair.
“Now be a good girl and stay home. Leave the rest of this to me. These people are not what they seem.”
“But I want to help.”
“No, I mean it. You do not want your first spanking to be a punishment. Now kiss me and let me go.” I did as I was told just to get him out of the house because I needed time to think.
What did he mean it was more serious than I thought? What exactly are those two up to? What could be more serious than trying to shake him down for millions? If it’s not about the company, then what is it about?
I waited until the coast was clear and locked myself away in my office before getting down to work. Obviously, Marcus isn’t going to be of any help since he’s snitching, so I’m on my own. Hmm, unless…. No, I can’t get her involved. She’s a Fed, but we’re not that close, and it might seem out of place for me to call her.
I could call Hank, but I’m sure he’d just do what Marcus did. But how else am I going to get the information that I need? All I have is what’s on paper, but it’s obvious that there’s more to their story if they’ve done this before because there wasn’t so much as a hint of anything in their past.
On paper, they’re both professionals with a healthy resume, though I was able to find out that Jack’s diploma is fake; that was as far as I got on him. He’s not the first to lie about his degree to get a job, but how did our people not know this?
Here I was, thinking I was so smart that I had my hand on the pulse of the situation, but apparently, I knew nothing. I picked up my phone to make a call. “Yes, love.”
“At least tell me that they’re evil.”
“Why? Are you feeling guilty about the shrimp?”
“Holy… you know about that?”
He just laughed like it was funny. “You have nothing to feel guilty about. But I still want you to stay out of it.”
“You were lying when you said you know everything I do, right?”
“If you say so.”
CHAPTER 10
I bit the bullet and called Cierra Mancini. It’s been years since we’d seen each other in person, mostly due to the pandemic that took over the world for the better part of two years, but also because with a young child and her career, there just hasn’t been time.
“Cierra, it’s me, Brittany. I’m sorry to just call you out of the blue like this, especially since I’m calling to ask a favor. It’s crass, I know…”
“What’re you saying? Of course, it’s not. Thanks for the gifts for the little one, by the way.”
“Oh, it’s nothing. We chatted for a bit about life and the mundane before I got to it.
I did feel guilty that I was burdening her with this, but by the time I was through laying it all out, she was the one making me feel better. She took my concerns seriously and seemed like she was taking notes because she kept asking me to repeat things to make sure she got them right.
Honestly, her response made me feel just a little bit spooked, especially when I mentioned Marcus and Mark’s response to me calling him. “Okay, Brittany, don’t do anything else just yet. I’ll look into this and get back to you before the end of the day.”
“Oh, okay, you think there’s something there?”
“I think that your husband being who he is and the fact that Marcus Blair called him after talking to you means that there’s more going on than just some girl trying to get in his pants. I can’t say more right now, but if it turns out to be what I think it is, I’ll tell you everything.”
“You’re scaring me here.”
“By the way, check all your electronics for spyware. That’s if you don’t want your husband to know what you’re up to. Oh, and your car. You may not find anything because they’re getting more sophisticated.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You’re married to Mark Wilson. There’s a better than good chance that he knows every move you make.”
