There were a lot of people from rival gangs, as well as men and women within his own circuit, that wanted him dead. This was not a new occurrence. Rather than allow his soldiers to take care of it, he did. There was no way for him to give the son of a bitch an easy death, so it had to be a hard one.

Three hours of torture to discover who had hired him. Some MC gang had offered him ten grand to try and kill him. Rather meagre, considering who he was, but then, what did he expect from assholes? So, now they had to take care of the MC, which wasn’t a problem.

Afterward, all he wanted was a drink, and it certainly wasn’t a glass of water he hoped to have. One look at Candice, though, and he didn’t need a stiff drink. He stopped himself from glancing down the full length of her body, even though that was exactly what he wanted to do.

She always wore the same thing—a pair of black jeans, and a blouse with the bar’s logo placed over her left breast. All that changed was her hair. Like tonight, it was pulled back off her face with two clips, whereas last night, she had it wrapped in a bun. She looked so tempting to him as he took a swig of water.

“Don’t ever think I’m the perfect gentleman. Trust me, I’m not.”

“Then if you’re not a perfect gentleman, what are you?” she asked.

“You don’t want to know.”

She gave him such a sweet smile that for several seconds he couldn’t do anything but stare at her. She was beautiful.

“I think you’re being a little bit of a tease. I know gentlemen and I know evil assholes.”

“Then put me in the evil asshole category.”

She sighed but didn’t have anything else to say to him. She rolled her eyes and walked away to serve another man.

Antwone looked at her shapely ass. Neither the jeans nor the shirt hid the fact that she had a nice, rounded ass. He was always tempted to touch her, to pull her close, and just feel her against him. He was always able to stop himself. She was a tempting woman, though.

Sipping his water, he finished the glass and knew it wasn’t the drink he wanted, but Candice was there to pour him another glass.

“How was your day?” she asked.

“Shit.”

“Ah, so, not a good day then.”

“Why do you think I’m here?”

She pressed a hand to her chest. “You wound me. I figured it was to finish off an amazing day by being in my thrilling company.”

This made him chuckle. “You are thrilling company.”

She wiped the bar down, lifting his bottle, then his glass. “Do you want to tell me all about this bad day?”

“Yeah, it was fucking shit,” he said.

He picked up a drink.

“Anything I can do to help?” she asked.

Antwone looked at her. “How would you handle a possible assassination?” He knew he shouldn’t be asking her these kinds of questions. She didn’t have a clue who he was or what he did with his life. To even tell her would risk her life.

He risked it now just by visiting this bar regularly. If his enemies knew why he came here, they would set about to destroy her or use her to make him meet their blackmail demands.

“Assassination? Do you mean like someone is trying to kill you?” she asked.

“In a roundabout fashion.” He couldn’t help but smile.

She pursed her lips. “Do you mean someone in your company is attempting to get rid of you?”

“Yeah, like that.”

She didn’t need to know that there was always a target on his back. She was so naive, it was very sweet to be in her company. He lifted the glass of water.

“Is this because you’re better than them?” she asked.

“Yep.” After all, he and Draven had been able to get into power, wipe out their competition, and redesign the family the way they wanted. It was why no one called him anything other than The Boss.

“Wow, and do they know this?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“So, you’re not one for modesty?”

“Why would I be modest about the truth?”

She held her hands up. “Fine, fine, fair enough. Well, I guess the only thing you can do is eliminate the competition, right?”

“Funny you should say that. I do.”

****

“You know you don’t have to do this,” Candice said.

This was the fourth night in a row that Antwone had walked her home. Even though she had told him he didn’t need to, she couldn’t help but feel relieved every time he did. It wasn’t that she was afraid to walk home, she’d been doing it for years. But, and this was a big but, she loved his company. Sometimes they didn’t even talk all the way home. They walked in silence.
