Barry and his girlfriend included.

It wasn’t until almost midnight that we got back to our room, alone, since my parents had taken Lucy to their room for the night.

“There are things my granddaughter does not need to witness,” my mom had claimed as she took her leash, and shot us a smirk before walking away.

“Okay. Help me out,” Shale demanded, wiggling her back at me until I slipped her zipper down.

At some point during the reception, my cousins had helped her get out of the fleece bodysuit, but she’d still been uncomfortable in the dress since.

And I was all too happy to get her out of it.

We were exhausted but as soon as my hands were on her skin, things started to heat up until we were consummating our marriage all over the suite before falling into bed, exhausted.

“Hey,” she said, rolling onto her side facing me, her head propped up on her hand.

“Yeah?” I asked, rolling to face her, her face all pink and glowing.

“I have a little wedding gift for you,” she said as she reached back, digging inside her pillowcase for something she must have stashed there earlier, anticipating this.

She came back with a little rectangular piece of paper, and handed it to me.

“What’s… wait,” I said as I looked at the sonogram. “Really?” I asked, heart feeling like it was gonna fucking explode it was so full.

“Yes,” she said, smile huge, and the glow she had took on a whole new meaning. “I’m pregnant.”

“How… how did you keep this a secret?” I asked.

“By not telling Barry,” she said, laughing.

“Good call,” I decided.

“You know he’s going to want a hand in naming her,” she said.

“When does he not want a hand in everything to do with our lives?” I asked.

“She’s going to have the best uncle in him,” Shale said, tone certain.

“Yeah, she is,” I agreed.

“And an amazing family,” she added. “And the perfect father. Everything I could want for her.”

“You forget the best mom,” I said, placing the picture down, then sealing my lips over hers.

“There’s one problem,” she said once we were done kissing.

“What’s that?”

“I’m going to have to cut down on coffee for months,” she said, pouting.

“Small price to pay,” I decided.

“Yeah,” she agreed, snuggling into me. “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m really glad I was almost killed by cocaine traffickers,” she said, angling her head up to give me a big smile.

“Me too, doll, me too.”
