The heavyset cop who stands beside him takes a step toward me making both Carver and Cruz adjust their positioning around both the cops and me, and it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. Even with their guns at their hips, they know damn well that they’re the ones in danger here. “We’re investigating a car bombing in the city last night,” the cop says. “Witnesses have placed a girl matching your description stepping out of the vehicle just minutes before it exploded in a populated area.”

I shake my head, laughing. “Of course you immediately assume it was me, right? The troubled foster girl. Well, unfortunately, you’ve got the wrong person, and quite frankly, I don’t appreciate being targeted purely because of my appearances. Do you know how many young brunette chicks live in Ravenwood Heights? Why aren’t you knocking on their doors? Besides, it wasn’t me,” I tell them. “I was at an event last night with over two thousand guests who can confirm my whereabouts.”

The first cop narrows his gaze. “We still need you to come down to the station and answer a few questions. You can make your statement and as soon as your alibi can be confirmed, you’ll be free to go.”

I grin wide and wave my hand to the guys on either side of me. “Ask away,” I tell them. “Both Dante and Cruz were at the event and will confirm that I was there all night. Or perhaps you would like to knock on every door on this street. They were all there too. I was the main speaker. My presence was not missed among the two thousand guests and hundreds of wait staff. I didn’t get a second to myself all night.” The cop glances back down the road at the sixteen other properties lining Ravenwood Estate and I lean back against my gate, crossing my legs as though I have all the time in the world. “Go ahead,” I tell them. “I’ll wait. I have all afternoon.”

Cruz scoffs. “Speak for yourself,” he mutters. “I’m stinging for a piss.”

I hold back a laugh, knowing exactly what else he’s been stinging to do ever since finding out that I accidentally fucked up my part of our deal, and something tells me that I won’t be walking away from it without the perfect imprint of Cruz’s hand on my ass. Though, it won’t be that easy. He’s going to make me work to come, that’s if he even allows me to. Cruz is usually so sweet, but a bitch better watch out when a man like Cruz Danforth has been crossed. He can be just as callous and cruel as the rest of them and a part of me can’t wait to find out.

Buuuuut … on the other hand, I’m sure that I could also bat my eyelashes and give him the sweetest kiss on his cheek, while reminding him how much I love him and everything will be forgiven. Grayson and King though, they’re in for a major ass whooping. I won’t be surprised if I wake up in the morning to find them both with black eyes for crossing Cruz’s boundaries.

The cops narrow their stares on me, looking at me as though they’ve already decided that I’m guilty while trying to figure out how the hell I could have such a firm alibi. Who knows ... maybe I have an evil twin of my own who’s been getting around doing all these reckless, incriminating, and dangerous acts, it couldn’t possibly be me. I’m an angel who just happens to love getting dicked ten times a day.

“Don’t leave the state,” the first cop warns. “We’re not through with you.”

I wink. “No one ever is.”

His nostrils flare and a moment later, the tubby guy turns on his heel and stalks back to the police cruiser as his partner begrudgingly follows behind. The boys don’t say a damn word, just stand by my side as we watch the cops reverse out of the top of my driveway.

They finally disappear down the street when Carver enters the code for the gate, letting us back in. “It’s not too late,” he mutters darkly. “The offer is still on the table. We can pack up our shit and be out of here by morning.”

I scoff and go to tell him how ridiculous he is when Cruz cuts me off before I can. “As if, bro,” he says, throwing his leg back over the Ducati. “You’d pack your shit and leave your sisters here with your mom? Yeah fucking right.”

“Good point,” Carver says, knowing more than anybody just how dangerous his plan could be, especially when it’s not just us that it affects.

The Ducati roars to life, and as the gate opens to my property, Cruz flies down it, leaving Carver and me to walk the rest of the way.
