Jeremy cleared his throat and said, “It looks like Gilley can defend herself just fine. I don’t believe you’ll need to spend a lot of time worrying about her safety.” His brow crinkled as he looked at the cat. “So…you’re telling me that this cat belonged to Veronica, and Gary wanted you to take care of it?”

“No, Gary didn’t ask me to take care of the cat; he was just worried about it. From the little bit of information he shared on that first night, the night he died, he mentioned the stray cat his girlfriend had been feeding.” Remi turned to look at Jeremy. “After that first vision, I was as confused as hell. Woke up in the hospital, hoping and praying I’d either had a bad dream or that somebody had roofied me at the club. Both of those things sounded better than the idea that I’d actually just witnessed somebody being tortured and murdered. As soon as I got home, I started searching the internet for a story that sounded anything at all like what I’d seen in my head. Unfortunately, since it was real, I found some information the next day. I’m not sure what story it was in, but I remember them talking about Gary’s hobbies and all the things he enjoyed in life. In my head, I kept remembering that all he seemed worried about was that damn cat. So, like an idiot, I went in search of said cat. Found it. Trapped it.” He tried snuggling Gilley again and she screamed like a banshee and wrestled her way out of his arms…only to climb back in again. “Like I told Ryder, she didn’t come willingly.”

“Did either of them say anything to you after you rescued the cat? Thank you? Anything?”

“No, neither have been able to talk since that first night. Rat girl…oops, Veronica has never been able to say anything to me. Gary was only capable of doing it that first night. During the other times, they are just there…watching. With Kris, Veronica did some of the hints your mother referenced. There’s no telling how many I missed, but I finally noticed she was trying to get me to look around, to see where I was so I would be able to pass on the information. It was also Veronica that got me to follow her to the mailbox.”

“Crazy cool, isn’t it?” Ryder said, his voice laced in awe and in eyes filled with love when he looked at Remi.

“I’ve seen that shit for years,” Jeremy answered. “It used to scare me to death when I was a kid. I mean, none of my relatives have the ability of astral projection, but they have some impressive skills. I’ve watched their eyes change colors when another soul enters their body during a séance. At times, their eyes will roll back in their head and there’s nothing visible but solid white…now, that’s creepy to see. It’s been all sorts of things my entire life,” Jeremy explained. “I’ve seen them give some people peace and destroy the lives of others with their readings. Trust me…that hurts them as badly as it hurts the person receiving the reading.”

“Let’s talk about Dirty Gertie, shall we?” Ryder suggested with a smirk. “I mean, your grandmother touched my boyfriend in so many inappropriate ways. It would have been funny if his face hadn’t held a look of utter terror the entire time.”

“It was terrifying,” Remi piped in. His head whipped around and his eyes lasered in on Jeremy. “She touched my cock and balls, man…lots of times. Not cool. If I didn’t know better, I’d say you did that shit on purpose.”

“Nah, I just panicked when you asked me about Mystic Mary. I had to come up with something. Mom called Gertie before you guys went over there and begged her to behave.” Jeremy looked between Remi and Ryder. “She swore she would be on her best behavior with the two of you.”

“Shit,” Remi muttered, wondering how it could have possibly been worse, if that was Gertie on her best behavior.

Jeremy pulled out his phone and frowned. “No updates; of course, I don’t really expect them to keep us in the loop.”

“Me either,” Ryder agreed. “I doubt we’ll hear a word from them.” His eyes drifted to Remi, “At least not until we reach out to them.” He motioned for Remi to join him on the couch. Without a thought, Remi was on his feet and in the next instant straddling Ryder’s lap. “You feeling okay, Boy Wonder? No twinges or anything?”

“Nope; I’m good.” He rolled his eyes. “Trust me; you’ll know it if things start to go South on me. There’s no hiding that shit from anybody.”

Jeremy cleared his throat. “Keep it PG, guys. I’m not much into watching if I’m not allowed to participate.”
