Remi wasn’t sure which but knew what he had to do. Glancing over at the clock on the nightstand, he noted that it was still very early, only seven in the morning. Maybe if he left now, he could catch her before she left for the day?

“You okay, baby?” Ryder asked quietly. “It’s…it’s been several weeks. I’d hoped it was over.”

It, Remi assumed, was the visits he had during Eric’s murderous rampage. After the rats feasted on Peterman’s worthless body, his visions had left his life as quickly as they’d entered it. He was no longer afraid to fall asleep, especially since he was curled against Ryder’s solid strength and warmth every single night.

Yeah, tonight had been a hint…to what rat girl could do to him if he didn’t finish the job. Shame washed over Remi; he should have thought of this on his own, without the not-so-gentle nudges from Veronica.

He looked up at Ryder and said, “Yeah; I’m fine, but there’s someplace I need to be.” He smiled as he recalled the first time he’d said those words to the man he loved. He’d been so confused then…so afraid of the horror dancing around inside his head. The confusion no longer existed. Make no doubt about it, he hoped there was never another soul that reached out to him, pleading for help or vengeance, or whatever it was they might need. While he didn’t want it to happen, he knew that if it did, he’d be ready to stand by their ghostly side.

Ryder would be beside him, giving him courage when his own might dwindle away.

“Not again,” Ryder mumbled as he stood up and started searching around the room for the clothes Remi had seductively peeled off his body the night before. “I really thought we’d get a break before anybody else reached out for your help.”

“Stop whining,” Remi answered as he climbed out of bed and went straight to the dresser to pull out fresh clothing for him. No point in searching the bedroom for his clothes; he’d lost them the second he and Ryder had entered the house last night. Yes, his jeans and T-shirt would be located about six inches from the entryway of the home they shared.

“I’m not whining,” Ryder countered. “It’s just that I really had plans for that hot body of yours this morning.” He looked over his shoulder at Remi and added, “And they didn’t involve you seeing dead people.”

“Haha,” Remi answered as he slid his feet into well-worn Vans. Gilley jumped on his shoulder, sat her boney ass right next to his left ear, and began licking her right paw. When he tilted his head to look at her, she swiped at his cheek with the foot she’d been cleaning, and released an ugly hiss right in his face. With her tantrum complete, she resumed her cleaning…still on his shoulder. It was where she spent most of her time, unless, of course, he and Ryder were fucking like rabbits. She hid from that.

Thank goodness.

“Cat going or staying?” Ryder asked as he slid his feet into a pair of combat boots of some sort.

Remi thought he looked sexier than hell in them, so he’d resorted to wearing them about everyday…and night.

“She can go,” Remi answered with a shrug. He wasn’t sure Gilley liked him but knew she wouldn’t stray far from his sight.

Ryder reached over and stroked her beneath her chin and the traitorous bitch purred loud enough to wake the fucking dead. Remi rolled his eyes and flipped both Ryder and Gilley a bird.

“Should I ask where we’re going…or do you even know?”

“I know exactly where I’m going,” Remi answered. Actually, he didn’t. Careful not to knock Gilley from her perch, he went over, grabbed his cell phone, and did a Google search. Within a few seconds, the address he needed popped up. “Got it. Let’s go.”

Ryder had turned in his notice with the police department immediately following the night he’d nearly lost Remi, so he had plenty of time on his hands to run around and chase after the man who held the key to his heart. Actually, both he and Jeremy had quit, just like they’d discussed. Plans were in the works to open their own private investigation firm. As much as he tried to fight it, Ryder still held a deep-in-his-heart fear of losing another person he loved, but also realized being with Remi was worth the risk.

After pulling through a drive through at a fast food restaurant to grab something to eat and some much-needed coffee, Remi punched the address into Ryder’s GPS and it revealed they had three-hour drive ahead of them. Ryder moaned but didn’t complain out loud. Remi settled back into the leather seat and alternated bites of a breakfast sandwich between him and Gilley. When Ryder stopped pouting, they discussed his plans for his new business, gossiped about the flourishing relationship between Jeremy and Ron Perry, and even discussed buying a home together. It was an idea they both loved.
