After a few more minutes of Ryder struggling to get the thick metal cut away while Ron and Jeremy flirted outrageously with one another, Ron was finally loosened from the chair. While they’d worked, the water had continued to rush into the pool and it had already reached Ron’s chest.
“Let’s get him out of here,” Ryder said. “I don’t like how fast the water is rising. We’ll get his feet out of the concrete blocks once he’s on dry land. The Fire Department should be here any second; I’m sure they’ll have tools of the trade a hell of a lot more efficient than my nifty hammer.”
When Ryder started to reach beneath the water to help lift Ron, Jeremy knocked his hands away and growled, “I’ve got this.”
Ryder simply rolled his eyes at his best friend’s cavalier behavior and waited to help support Ron’s concrete enclosed feet once Jeremy lifted him into his arms. He considered letting He-Man try to handle the job all by himself, but then decided there was no reason for poor Ron to suffer because Jeremy was in the mood to try and impress.
They’d barely gotten Ron out of the water and gently seated on the hard surface surrounding the pool when the captain’s feet suddenly appeared in Ryder’s line of vision. Perfect. He really wasn’t in the mood to listen to the man’s bullshit. All he wanted to do was hold Remi in his arms and perform a show-and-tell on how proud he was of his lover’s psychic abilities. They’d, once again, managed to thwart Eric’s attempt at torture and murder.
“Well…well; lookee who it is,” the captain said. “I know that Tatum girl cleared you boys, but damn if you both aren’t making it tough for me not to think you’re involved with this. Found another one, did ya?”
“Yeah, yeah,” Ryder mocked. “That’s us. We abducted and concreted Ron to the cement floor just so we could risk our lives to try and save him. You got us, captain. You’re fucking brilliant by figuring that one out all by yourself. Next thing you know, you’ll be able to dress yourself without having to use Garanimals.”
Jeremy piped in with, “We even thought we’d make it more interesting by calling 911 and telling you guys about it so when you showed up to help, you could take away some of our glory. And if that wasn’t enough, we sent Remi out to point you in the right direction. Regular little criminals, captain…that’s us.”
Ignoring their sarcastic remarks, the captain turned to Ron and asked, “Do you know who abducted you? Did you see who did this to you?”
Ron looked pale. “No, not exactly,” he said. “I mean, Kris and I were at a club having a good time, but when we went to get into our car…I don’t remember anything after that. Nothing. I woke up, concreted to the floor of the pool with the water rushing in on me. The water was already to my waist by the time I was aware of anything going on around me.” His eyes locked with Jeremy when he added, “But I know these guys didn’t have anything to do with it. They saved me.” Anger flashed in his eyes when he looked up at the captain. “They nearly killed themselves trying to rescue me.”
“Riigghhhtt,” the captain mocked. Then he looked around and said, “Where is Boy Wonder, anyway? Setting the next trap so you two can look like superstars when you save the day?”
A wave of sheer terror washed over Ryder as soon as he heard the captain’s words. His eyes immediately swept the pool area before turning to one of the policemen who’d helped him free Ron from the pool. “He guided you to this building, right? He was here just a few minutes ago. You saw him.” Ryder looked around wildly. “He has to be here.”
The sarcasm and accusations left the captain’s eyes immediately. “What do you mean? Nobody guided us to this building. We came here based on your 911 call.” He looked around and then back at Ryder and Jeremy. “Where’s Remi? Is he supposed to be here?” Looking at his men, he asked, “Did any of you see the Newsome kid here?”
The youngest officer, a rookie still in training, stepped forward and said, “We never saw the psychic kid outside, Captain.” He looked around at the other cops and fireman surrounding them. “Did anybody see Newsome on the premises tonight?”
When they all gave a negative answer, Ryder’s heart landed in the pit of his stomach. Remi had known there was something wrong. There’d been more than one trap set on this night. He had no doubt Eric had been watching, waiting for them to show up to rescue Ron. Once he and Jeremy were distracted, the bastard had been able to take Remi.
