“We appreciate that,” Ryder answered and for the first time, there wasn’t judgement or anger in his voice. He’d been holding Remi’s hand the entire time, but now he gripped it tighter.
“The woman came to me in search of her younger sister. The girl has been missing for nearly eight months. The police have exhausted all leads and the case has already gone cold, but her sister refuses to give up, even when I told her the girl was no longer of our world.”
“So, she was murdered by the same man?” Remi asked quietly as he thought about the beautiful girl with the sad eyes and pet mouse.
“I was unable to view anything regarding her murder,” Mary answered. “Actually, I wasn’t able to garner any useful information at all. The spirit left with Remi, and I couldn’t get her to return. I only knew that she was lost to this world because she revealed herself when she reached for Remi. In her heart, her sister already knew she was dead; she and the rest of the family want her body…want to give her a proper burial where they can visit and pay their respects.” Mary looked at both Remi and Ryder. “They want to give her the things that all loved ones want to do for those that go ahead of us.”
Remi started shaking his head. “I don’t know where she is or how she died. She’s just there. Gary, one of the man’s other victims, could talk to me after he died, but the girl never has. With my second encounter with Gary, he didn’t talk. Do they…lose that ability?”
Mary arched her brow in surprise. “It’s amazing that you could communicate with Gary at all, especially verbally. The dead will often offer us hints as to how things have happened or how they believe they may happen in the future, but they can’t directly do things to alter the sequence of life. Hints, Remi. Watch for the hints.”
“Hints? Are you kidding me?” Remi leaned his head on Ryder’s shoulder. “I can’t do this.”
Mary smiled. “You’ve done brilliantly so far, Remington. You mentioned that you were able to intervene and stop another murder? Do you have any idea how strong that makes you? I don’t know of any other psychics that have been able to alter the future by witnessing the present or past. Be strong and be brave. Souls are depending on you.” She looked down at her watch. “Now…if you don’t mind, I have an appointment scheduled to arrive in the next thirty minutes and I’d like for you to be gone. I believe you have enough on your plate without attracting the attention of another soul in anguish.”
She stood up, but then paused to ask Remi a question. “The girl brought a picture of her sister with her. Do you mind telling me what the girl in your vision looks like?”
Remi looked at Ryder and Ryder shrugged, giving him the okay. “She’s petite, kinda pixie-like. Pale skin. Bright red hair. Exquisite beauty but looks incredibly sad. I…I would think she would have a beautiful smile.”
“She did,” Mary answered. “In the picture her sister brought, that was the first thing I noticed about her.” Mary took Remi’s hand and said, “Give her peace if you can, Remington. If you can’t, though, you must be strong enough to set it aside. Don’t let this destroy you. Our abilities are meant to aid, not do damage.” Turning to Ryder, she added, “Protect him.”
Ryder and Remi spent nearly three hours with Gertie. She explained everything she knew about Astral Projection and touched Remi on every inch of his body, claiming it was necessary in for her to determine what other abilities he might possess. Ryder might have fallen for it if Jeremy hadn’t already warned him. Dirty Gertie was seventy-nine years old, but someone forgot to inform her of her age…or Remi’s age.
Voodoo priestess, his ass, Ryder thought to himself. Mystic Mary was more believable than Gertie. After the first hour, he’d started to believe Gertie was in it just for the ass…Remi’s ass. After the second hour, he’d been convinced that Dirty Gertie was about to put on a strap-on and go for a round of pegging. Sometime during the third hour, Ryder wondered if he should just try and save himself and let Remi take one for the team.
He finally texted Jeremy with an SOS and, like a good partner, he’d called his grandmother and distracted her long enough for them to make their getaway.
“Okay…that was creepy, right?” Remi asked as he smashed the Mustang convertible’s gas pedal to the floor. “I wasn’t imagining that, was I? I mean, she made Mystic Mary seem like the fucking Queen of England. Do you know how many times she touched my balls? Too many!” He shook his head from side to side. “And did you see all those cats? Dear God in Heaven, I thought I was going to have a meltdown. You know I hate cats and they hate me. They were everywhere. Why would a voodoo priestess need that many cats?” He paused and then screamed, “Fuck, do you think she sacrifices them?” Remi slammed on the brakes when he asked the last question, causing several rude honks and a couple of curse words to fly in his direction.
