Petru could see that what he said pleased her. He found himself smiling at her. Or at least, he hoped it was close to a smile. He hadn’t smiled in a very long time—if ever.

“I think we’re going to be just fine,” she said. “The key to a good relationship is both parties putting in the work and being determined to make it. I think we’ve got that covered.”

Her gaze fixed on his mouth, her breath hitching in her throat. His fist caught at the silky mass at the back of her scalp and tilted her head. Her lips parted in a gasp, and he took full advantage, his mouth coming down on hers.

Safia lost her ability to think. She lost her ability to breathe. There was no reasoning, only feeling. The earth moved beneath them, so much so that she was instantly dizzy, as if the planet were rotating far too fast. Her ears roared with thunder, drowning out all sound. There was only Petru, turning her into a living flame. Pouring himself into her.

She’d always felt a little apart from everyone. Just a little lonely. Different. With Petru, the moment he shared her mind, every lonely place was filled with him. When he kissed her, she felt completely and utterly accepted and bonded to him. More, it was as if she melted into him, and they shared more than their minds. It was such an intimate experience, as if they were skin to skin when she knew both were clothed.

Maybe clothed. She felt the cool of the cave on her bare skin. In contrast, his mouth was a living flame moving from hers and over her lower lip, teeth tugging and nipping, his tongue hot as it traced the curve and then returned to pour more flames down her throat. His hands wandered over her breasts, cupping the weight of them, thumbs sliding over her aching nipples. Along with his teeth tugging and nipping at her lower lip, his fingers found her nipples and matched the same rhythm, rolling and tugging until she was on fire with need, unable to stay still.

He kissed his way down to her chin, leaving her breathless, her body on fire. She was desperate for the taste of him. For his hands and mouth on her. She wanted to feel his teeth sinking into her, connecting them together.

“Petru.” There was an ache in her voice. A note of desperation. She didn’t care that he knew how she was feeling. “You’re going too slow.”

“Slow is good, Safia.”

“It isn’t,” she denied. She was going to burn up. The flames seemed to be licking at her insides, beginning to roll through her veins and spreading like a wildfire out of control.

“It is. Trust me, Ku Tappa Kulyak, slow is so much better for now.”

Whenever he called her Demon Slayer or Fearless Defender, she found herself glowing on the inside. She couldn’t help herself. That only added to the magical feelings Petru produced in her with his hands and mouth. She would never get enough of him. His teeth nipped at her chin and then moved to her throat, lingering over the pulse beating there. Her entire body shuddered in reaction.

She couldn’t sit still, her legs restless, her hips bucking. Deep inside, she felt that endless coiling, the pressure tightening into a heavy fist of desire. Her breasts felt heavy and achy. Her entire body was far too hot.

Petru. The only appropriate means of communication was the far more intimate telepathy. She could barely breathe his name.

His lips continued their wandering exploration. Slow, as if he were savoring every inch of her skin between her throat and the swell of her breasts. The more he explored, the faster her heart beat. He had to do something soon, or she was going to implode.

Petru kissed first her left then her right breast, feasted at one, then the other, while she cradled his head to her and arched her back to give him better access. Safia threw her head back, trying to stay still, trying not to beg him to take her blood. In her wildest dreams, she never believed she would crave such a thing, but she was nearly out of her mind, desperate for the feel of his erotic bite.

His teeth scraped back and forth over her pounding pulse just on the upper curve of her breast, right over the spot he’d taken her blood before.

I’m not going to survive this.

For a moment, it flashed through her mind that her statement was ironic. She wasn’t going to survive. At least not being the same exact person. Once he took her blood and she took his, she would die and be reborn Carpathian.

Safia’s breath caught in her throat. She would be like Aura. Like Petru. No longer able to walk in the sun.
