“Where is my grandson?” Charlie’s voice precedes him, and it’s not another moment before he bursts into the room, carrying a bouquet of flowers and a giant teddy bear under one arm, a bunch of balloons, and a gift bag in the other hand. He must’ve just gotten off work at his overnight security job since he’s still in uniform.
“Dad, you didn’t have to do all of that.” Bianca is laughing and crying at the same time as Charlie sets everything down, and Dad gets out of the way to give him room.
“All of what? This? Please. That’s nothing compared to how I’m going to spoil this kid.”
“Speaking of this kid…” I raise my eyebrows, nodding his way, before handing him his grandson. Judging by the joy radiating from his face, I just handed him the world.
“Dad, meet Callum Charles.” Bianca’s choked whisper brings tears to my eyes–and Charlie’s, too.
Things haven’t been perfect until now. They were pretty damn far from perfect for a long time. As I look around the room with Romero’s arm around me and my head on his shoulder, it occurs to me that we all have had to let go of what was holding us back. We all had to fight our battles, and we all came out on the other side a little stronger than we were before.
And now, there’s this symbol of new beginnings sleeping in his grandfather’s arms. New beginnings for all of us. So much more than I ever dared dream of.
My best friend looks my way, and we share a smile that’s full of the past — and full of hope for the future.
