“Would you like to see the basement?” Emmett asked, leading them back into the living room, which boasted hardwood floors and a fucking window seat with a view.

Who would ever want to leave this place?

“Should I?”

Emmett’s laugh was a bit awkward, as was everything about him. “Only if you plan on storing anything, I guess.”

“What about decorating? Not that this whole Better Homes and Gardens theme you’ve got going on isn’t nice, but I kind of have my own style.”

Emmett flushed and looked around the space, no doubt trying to see it from a stranger’s eyes. “Kathy decorated. I’m not particularly attached to anything.”

“Great. I promise not to get too wild on you.”

“Does that mean you’ll move in?”

“I—”

“Azariah, can I have a word?” Connelly tugged on his arm.

“Would you give us a minute?” Z asked.

Emmett nodded as Connelly pulled him out of the apartment. The hall was tiled with a clean gray stone that made every sound echo.

“Don’t ask me what I think you’re about to ask me, Hot Fudge.” He did his best to keep his voice hushed. The last thing he wanted was to piss off his potential neighbors.

“Azariah—”

“I know your heart is in the right place but it’s not the right time. I don’t want that decision to be based on necessity. Can’t you get that?”

“Of course I do.”

“I’m doing this for us. I need to know that I can be just as independent as ever, that I can take care of myself and still have you in my life. Otherwise, I will never trust myself again.”

“I understand.”

“You do?”

“I know you better than you think I do, baby.”

“Then why?”

“I figured we’d make him wait, maybe get you a better deal.”

“God, you’re a pain in my ass.”

Connelly hummed and closed the distance between them to press a kiss to Z’s cheek. “Not right now, but maybe later, once we get you moved in.”

“You’re going to get me kicked out before that happens.”

“Kiss me. It has been too long since my lips touched yours.” As if to prove his point, Connelly brought their mouths together in a sweet kiss that swept Z away.

“Now, that is what dreams are made of,” Z said when it finally ended.

“Rainbows, unicorns and picket fences, Azariah. Let’s get in there and get this over with.”

Rainbows, unicorns and picket fences.

Z never would have thought anyone could make him a believer, but Connelly had. He twined their fingers together. “Lead the way.”
