This girl is breaking me with silence. “You will be...no fuck that. You are my life now, baby. We haven’t begun to touch the number of ways I am going to own you. But make no mistake, you already own me.” I lean in and kiss her, reassuring her, showing her. Her whimpers of emotion slice through an artery and I can feel my heart beating in my chest. My sweet girl is so filled with sadness and pain, that she can’t hold it in when inundated with love. “It’s ok baby.'' I assure her between kisses. “I will never hurt you, my Treasure.”
Once she has settled and soaked, I dry her off and carry her back to the bed. The clock reads noon. Shit. I need to be in the office. The sheet slips down her shoulder and my mouth begins to water, knowing even her shoulder belongs to me. “I have to go into the office, baby. I have meetings the rest of the day. You sleep.'' I whisper in her ear. She groans and drifts back off. Once I am dressed, I pick up my phone as I walk out the room.
“Boss.”
“I’m on my way down. I have a one ‘o clock meeting. Is Anais on the property?” I want to be sure her security is here before I walk out.
“Yes. She is in the kitchen with Lola.” Perfect. Acknowledging everyone as I walk in, I turn to Anais.
“She doesn’t leave this house. Do you understand? She doesn't leave and no one...I mean no one comes in without prior authorization from me. Am I clear? She is my biggest asset now. Nothing means anything without her. Are we all clear?'' I grit out to everyone in the room wanting to be sure we are all on the same page. I see heads nodding as I look around and straighten my jacket.
“What should I do when she wakes up?” Lola asks as I am walking out the door.
“Whatever she needs. She needs a friend, Lola. Just watch her heart. My girl is sweet and kind. She is not of our world, though she has her own darkness.”
“I understand.” is all she says before she walks back to the other side of the house. Walking out of the door, I find my chest hurts and my hands ache. Is it going to be like this every time I walk away from her? How the hell am I going to get anything done?
Shit. I don’t remember ever being this distracted during a meeting before. “Mr. Lassiter. Do you have all the documentation? Mr. Lassiter?” fuck his voice is annoying. The look of annoyance must show on my face, as his jerks back like I slapped him. Grabbing the file from my desk I slide it across the table.
“Of course I do. Don’t insult me. Nothing in these documents will negate the fact that your client forfeited his right to the patent royalties when he sold it to a third party with the appropriate signatures and agreement from my client. Now, are you going to continue to waste my time on a case we both know you will never win or are going to drop this baseless claim and tell your client to find a hobby.” Nothing I hate more than fuckers wasting my time. In the light or in the dark. He huffs for a moment as his client squirms.
“Very well. Have your office send over the documents dropping the suit and I will sign them.” Do I look like fucking Garfield to these clowns?
“You will sign them now. Here you go.” I toss the already prepared documents to him and languish in the surprised look on his face. That’s right, you dumb fuck. I had you all along. I think as his face turns red and blusters. He scribbles some shit, passes it to his client and they both stomp their whiny asses out of my office. Turning to my client, I hold out my hand.
“As usual Phil, it was a pleasure.”
“You never cease to amaze me, Dario. I will make sure my accountant sends you over a bonus. Good day.” He walks out and I slide back into my chair. This is why I think the dark life called me to me. Being up here, in the daylight, watching crooked no good bastards get away with shit, sets me on tenterhooks. When it happens in the dark, I expect and take care of it. Bzzz.
“Dario, your sister is on line 1.” Christ. I huff out. I hate when Doris goes on vacation and she sends Camden up here to fill in. She is a pretty girl and all, but she is not...mine. She’s too bright. Bubbly. You can tell nothing has ever touched her. I need dark and light. Clean and grit. I need...my Jewel.
