“What the fuck did you say to me?”

“You let her work in this shithole in the middle of the night while you’re wearing a three-piece suit. Where’s your wife? At home with the kids?”

“You have a wife and kids?” May gasps, looking fucking distraught, which I make a note of.

I give her a look like she’s crazy before turning my attention to the little pussy with brass balls. My hatred for the man was already on the verge of snapping his neck the second I spotted him in her presence. He shouldn’t be anywhere near my future wife.

I come within an inch of the little fuck and say, “You are very wrong. I’m not married, and you’re the one with the wife and kids. Does she know you’re out trying to fuck your ex?”

“That’s not true. We’re separated.”

“Lying piece of shit.” I grip his arm and spin him around, checking his pocket and finding his wedding ring. “Get the fuck out of here and away from my woman.”

Releasing him with a shove, he falls to the ground and then gets to his feet, backing away. “I’m going. I’m going.” He dashes out of the restaurant to a rush of applause. It’s not something I’m looking for.

“Why the fuck was he here?” I ask her.

“Excuse me?”

“It’s a simple question.”

“Yes, it is, but it’s a rude one that I shouldn’t have to explain to a man like you.”

I smirk at my future wife. “Considering you used me as a fake boyfriend, you should explain it to me, amore.”

“Thank you for the assist, but almost anyone would have done.”

“Don’t try to irritate me. Is your boss in?”

“No.”

“Okay. Be a good girl. I have to go.” I’m only leaving because I’m too tempted to take her tonight and fuck the shit out of her. Unfortunately, I have an important business meeting tomorrow that will interrupt my time with her, and that would not be acceptable.

I walk outside and go directly to Luca. “Keep her safe. Tomorrow, I’ll make my move and claim my queen.”

“Yes, Dario.”

Chapter Seven

May

The rest of the night was a blur. Customers were quick to get out of my way and pay without a word as if they expected the brute to come back in and bust their heads if they spoke to me.

In fact, there was a man in an all-black suit who stayed just out of sight in the parking lot. I caught him staring into the building a couple of times, but he didn’t come inside. Although he never approached, I had no doubt he was there watching to see if Greg came back.

When it’s time to leave, I half expect the man who kissed me so tenderly to come back and pick me up, but he doesn’t. The hurt weighs heavily, but I try to let it go. It isn’t like we know each other, and I’m the one that begged him for his help. Although he gave it without even knowing what I wanted which was pretty shocking. Hell, I barely got the words out before his mouth was on mine, taking my kiss in a possessive way.

I stroll into the apartment to find January still there. “Hey, girl. What’s up?”

“Change of plans. He asked me to delay our trip by two hours.”

“Oh, okay. Well, be safe, and remember—if he tries anything, use the knife.”

“I will, without a doubt.” We hug and then I head to my bedroom because I’m too tired to stay awake. It’s way too early to call my sister, who is probably getting the last few hours of sleep before she has to start her shift. I’m sure we’ll talk when I wake up and she takes her midday break.

I start stripping out of my clothes when my phone dings with a message. Expecting it to be from my sister, I check it to see it’s from my boss. I’m not hosting the game night tomorrow and will need you to come in for your shift.

I groan and reply with a simple, Okay.

Setting my phone down on my nightstand and plugging it into the charger, I finally head into the bathroom. After a quick shower, I crawl into bed and fall asleep, letting my fatigue take over.

My alarm blares me awake. Son of a bitch. I jump out of bed and then realize it’s not my alarm, but rather sirens, coming from downstairs. Checking the time, I see it’s already two thirty. I slept longer than I normally would. Maybe it’s because I was dreaming of the handsome stranger again, and this time I have a memory to relive. That kiss. It was magnetic, intense, and yet too short.

I throw on my clothes and run down to make sure nothing happened to January. As I step out of my apartment door, I’m confronted by two police officers in uniform and a man in a suit.
