“Dad, is everything okay?”

“Yes. Why?” Shit, could he hear us?

“I was looking for Mom.”

“She’s napping.” She slaps my arm, trying not to laugh.

“Then who are you in there with?” our eldest son snarls angrily. We both look at each other briefly and then I shake my head. He’s just like me, and I have a feeling he’s not as unaware of what we were up to as I thought which means I have some explaining to do.

“Whoa. What the hell is that tone?” I adjust myself and walk to the door and open it slightly. “What is your problem?”

He tries to look around me to see inside the room. “I know why my friend’s parents divorced. His dad was having sex with the babysitter. How could you betray my mother?” His nostrils flare and he’s ready to fight me. I smirk and shake my head.

“Son, I would never betray my wife, your mother, and the love of my life.” I look to May and say, “Decent?” She nods, and then I open the door. “Your mom has my heart and soul.”

“Oh…” Then he ducks his head, but I don’t miss how red his cheeks have gotten.

“Son, look up at me,” I command. It takes a second for him to build up that second round of courage before he lifts his gaze. “I’m going to say this to you because today you did something that made your old man proud. Don’t ever back down from doing something that’s hard when you know it’s right.”

He nods and I point his mother and add, “That wonderful woman is the damn queen of this family. One day you’ll be the head of the family. You take care and remember what you learned—that betraying your own queen will never be acceptable.”

“I understand.”

“Good. Now, excuse us. Your mother is tired and needs to get ready to go out to dinner while you stay with Mrs. Ricci.”

“Okay.” He smiles at both of us, relief from being dismissed or the truth who knows, but either way, he’s glad to escape.

“Can I die of embarrassment now?” May sighs, pressing her hand over her face.

I tug it off her gorgeous façade and then kiss her lips. “No, you promised to stay with me forever. Let’s go get ready, my wife.”

“Yes, my husband.”

“I’ll never get tired of hearing that.” I kiss her again as we walk out of my office, feeling like a king, raising strong princes and princess with a hell of a queen at my side.
