“Right? And Isaiah keeps disappearing all the time.” Isaiah was a tech wizard who hated being on his own. So when Jenner and the others went on tour, he usually tagged along in his own RV.

“Abe was bossing everyone around, I bet,” she said to Cat dryly.

“Of course he was. He doesn’t know how to be anything but bossy.” Abe was Jenner’s manager.

All of them were close, and sometimes they got on each other’s nerves, but it seemed to work for them. Cat and Maeve were the odd ones out in the group since they’d branched off on their own.

Cat because she had Alejandro. Maeve because, well, she just didn’t feel like she fit in with them. Like she had her place. Hanging around with Jenner came with its price. The fame and notoriety weren’t something she was comfortable with. She’d tried to go out to dinner with him about ten months ago, and she’d ended up in the tabloids. That had been the catalyst for her heading off on her own.

There was more knocking. Seemed Cat’s bodyguard was getting impatient.

“Jenner’s groupies are driving Immy insane.”

She sighed and shared a look with Cat. Immy had been in love with Jenner forever, but he didn’t see her as anything other than a sister. She needed to move on, but she kept thinking that one day he’d wake up and want her.

“All right, I better go. Mi niñera is going to be barging in here if I don’t.”

She bet the poor bodyguard just loved being called Cat’s nanny.

“Love you. Bye!” She blew kisses at the other woman who pretended to catch them.

Damn, she missed that girl.

After she’d finished the video call, she opened her closet door and checked all the outfits she had. Perhaps she should try going dancing again. If she got a taxi to and from the front door of the club, then nothing would happen, right?

Her stomach rolled anxiously. Then again, maybe not.

Crap.

Maybe she hadn’t been ready. And look what had happened.

Nope. Best she just stayed locked up in this shabby apartment in this crappy neighborhood where she had no chance of seeing sexy Gray again.

Yeah, best she just do that.

This was stupid.

Gray didn’t chase women. He didn’t come to a club just hoping to run into them.

And yet here he was. In the VIP area of The Edge, hoping she’d be here.

He could have gone to Hooks and Cuffs and found a sub to play with. Instead, he was here, looking for her.

A week had passed since he’d dropped her off in that shithole of a boarding house. He hadn’t liked that. The urge to pick her up and carry her out of that place had been strong. Which is why he’d made himself walk away.

He couldn’t afford to get close to anyone. He needed to keep away from her. From temptation.

Right. So that’s why you’ve done three drive-bys of her building this week? And it’s why you’re here at The Edge instead of doing something . . . anything else?

He’d been unable to get her out of his mind. It was ridiculous.

If anything, where she lived looked worse in the daylight, and every time he’d driven past he’d nearly had a coronary over it.

What was she doing in a place like that? Who the fuck was meant to be looking after her?

He tightened his hold on the railing. She wasn’t coming.

Why the fuck hadn’t he taken her phone number when he’d had the chance?

Because you’re an idiot who thinks he doesn’t deserve anything nice.

Well, he didn’t. He’d lived most of his life breaking the law, doing things that would likely have Maeve running the other way screaming. No way she would want him if she knew the truth.

Who said you’d have to tell her?

A quick fuck, then leave.

He turned away, ready to leave when he caught a glimpse of gold in the crowd.

There she was.

Maeve danced, trying to lose herself in the beat. But for some reason, that sense of peace that generally came over her when she danced wasn’t there tonight.

Why not?

Maybe it was because she couldn’t stop thinking about him.

Silly Maeve.

He’s a complication you don’t need. All you need is your vibrator. It’s safer.

Except she didn’t want her vibrator. She wanted him.

Urgh, she was an idiot. She should just go home. In an Uber.

Yep, no walking down dark streets for her tonight.

Suddenly, the feeling of being watched came over her. But instead of a cold chill, she felt heated. As though someone was caressing her. Touching her in all the right places.

She turned, looking around. Her breath caught as she spotted him standing on the dance floor. Shock filled her.

You hoped he’d be here.

Yeah, but she hadn’t dared believe that he might be.

She felt someone come up behind her as she moved. Perhaps it was stupid of her to come back to a crowded club after what had just happened last weekend. But she’d spent enough of her life being scared, and she was sick of it.
