Beat. Beat. Skip. Beat.

God, she hated that. It made her feel ill. Plus, it stressed her out.

Maybe you should see a doctor.

“What did you say? Oh, the bumper cars. Why couldn’t I go in them? I’m a good driver.”

“You have to still be sore from your accident. I’m surprised it didn’t hurt when Loki was jostling you around earlier.”

She frowned, confused. “What do you mean?”

“When he was piggybacking you.”

Looking up at him, she raised her eyebrows. “You’re watching me again?”

“What made you think I’d stop?”

Shit. She didn’t know. She had just figured he would.

“I’m still worried something will happen to you. It’s actually gotten worse.”

Shit. “Remy, I’m sorry.”

“Why are you sorry?”

“Because you’re worrying so much over me when you really don’t need to.”

“Don’t I? You’re clearly exhausted. You should be at home, resting. Recovering. Instead, yesterday you made dozens of cupcakes and today you’re here. This isn’t restful.”

“I’m fine. But thanks for caring.”

He cupped the side of her face, making her heart race. Damn it. He was so potent.

“I don’t believe you. I saw you wincing a few times as though something hurt. Where does it hurt?”

She shook her head.

“Tell me.”

“I just have some bruising. That’s all.”

He frowned. “Fuck. You should be rubbing some cream on them.”

“I . . . I will.” She glanced over at Loki to find him staring back at her. His eyes were narrowed. And she knew that if he wasn’t in a moving bumper car, that he’d already be over here. “Thanks for checking on me.”

She didn’t want to step back and hurt Remy’s feelings, but she also didn’t want to hurt Loki.

Isa rubbed her stomach, feeling icky.

“What did Loki say about the person that ran you off the road?” he asked.

Well. Hell.

She hadn’t expected him to ask her that. And how did she answer?

“I didn’t tell him that part.”

A scowl filled his face. “Excuse me?”

Crap. Panic flooded her. She hated disappointing people.

“I didn’t tell him all of the details. I just told him that I was blinded by someone’s headlights, which is technically true.”

“Why wouldn’t you tell him the full truth?”

“I didn’t see much point.”

“Not much point? He lives with you. What if something happens again?” he demanded.

Oh God.

“You think it’s going to happen again?” she whispered, dread and fear filling her.

Fuck.

Why had he said that? Or at least, why hadn’t he said it more gently?

“No. I don’t think that. Fuck, baby. I didn’t mean to scare you. I just meant that this person might be someone who drives that road regularly.”

“Oh God, I didn’t think of that.”

He placed his hands on her shoulders, massaging the tight muscles. “Hey, calm down. I don’t think that’s a strong possibility. But I just think it’s better if your roommate and friend knows the full truth.”

“He’ll just worry.”

Maybe he should.

But he didn’t say that. She was already pale and trembling.

“You should tell him, baby. And I need to talk to him about the security light.”

“What? Why? I thought it was working now.”

“Yeah, it is because I replaced the bulb. But it was smashed when I checked on it.”

“Oh. You bought a new one? I owe you some money. And for the groceries too. I’m sorry I forgot about that.” She gave him a guilty look.

Oh, hell no. That wasn’t happening.

“Like hell you’re going to offer me money,” he growled.

Her eyes widened, but before she could speak, she was lifted in the air and placed behind a large body.

A large, angry body.

“What the hell did you say to her?” Loki demanded.

Remy was aware that people were starting to look at them. Not that he cared about what people thought. However, he was certain that no one here would be on his side of the equation.

He was used to being the outsider. That’s how he’d always liked it.

So why was it starting to annoy him?

“Listen, Loki—”

“No, you listen,” Loki interrupted him. “You’re upsetting her. You need to leave.”

“Loki, I’m fine.” She attempted to get around him, but he pushed her back.

“Be careful with her,” Remy snapped before he could think better of it.

Loki’s eyes flared. “I would never hurt Isa. You were upsetting her. And you need to get away from her before I make you.”

Hmm. Remy wasn’t so sure who would come out best between the two of them. Remy was bigger. But Loki was clearly a fighter and he wasn’t exactly small.

“Loki, it’s all right,” she said. “He didn’t mean to upset me.”

Loki narrowed his eyes at Remy, his warning clear.

Fuck, this wasn’t helping anything. The last thing he wanted was for Loki to hate him.

But he also needed to ensure that Isa was all right.

“Think about what I said, Princess.”

“Her name is Isabelle,” Loki said. “And what exactly did you say to her?”

Isabelle sighed. “He wanted me to tell you that the security light bulb had gone out and he replaced it.”
