My face ignited in blistering, rejected heat and my fiery nagging bitch rumbled just below the surface.

What guy wouldn’t want to fuck me? God, I’m a piece of prime ass, curvy, but prime.

“Come on.” I walked my fingers down his forearm then gently pulled his hand from the keyboard. “You need a break I think.”

“Angel.” He said with a controlled tension in his voice that was like a warning shot across the bow. “Baby, I’m so fucking busy right now I can’t even take a shit. I have to get this done, now. I’m not going anywhere, but right now I can’t.”

That little switch flipped inside me and venom shot from my lips. “You don’t do anything around here! Including me. I have to clean up, do the dishes, vacuum and all you do is work! You need to step up and be a man. Jenna’s boyfriend follows her around like a little puppy kissing her ass. Doing everything she tells him. Why can’t you—”

“Baby, are you serious right now?” Adam cut me off, shooting his chair out from under him as he stood up like a rocket, the intensity in his eyes piercing my heart as his fists balled.

I crossed my arms and cocked my hip, the buzzing in my head overriding reason. “If we can’t be equal partners and you don’t start doing what I say sometimes, then—”

“Really?” He cut me off again, only this time his voice was dead calm. He took a step forward, squaring his broad shoulders, as his pupils dilated.

“Yeah. Really.” I spat back. “We need to talk about things. About you treating me better, more like I want. The way I see my friends’ boyfriends treating them. All your alpha growly stuff isn’t what I think a good relationship is.” My voice shook as the muscles under Adam’s shirt flexed.

“Well, how about that. You want to talk about doing more things the way ‘you want’. Well, Angel, I’m going to tell you something right now, so listen fucking close. I’m. Fucking. Busy. Right. Now. I love you, baby, but you are driving me crazy. We’re going to talk, we need to, I get it. But, right now, shit ain’t gonna happen so you better move on and let me finish what I gotta do. Because, you do know this is also part of how I take care of you.”

“Fuck your macho bullshit, Adam. Real men listen to their women, they decide things together, they ask, they don’t tell. You need to grow up.” I stomped my foot like a four-year-old, knowing I was so far over the line I deserved whatever was coming to me.

I spun on my heel, huffing as my heart pounded, grabbing the keys to the black BMW 550i that Adam gave me to drive and made my way out of that house.

“Shit.” The anger welled up inside of me and overflowed, blurring my eyes as I threw my purse across the car against the passenger window, spilling the contents all over the floor.

My fingers shook as I pressed the ignition button and the car hummed to life.

I needed to talk. I needed someone to make me feel good, someone to agree with me and validate me. Driving down the wide, tree-lined street, looking at the huge houses, I was anything but grateful. I was in super-brat mode and I pulled out my ace of spades.

I ran my fingers over the smooth glass of my phone, tapped on contacts and dialed.

“Ron? Hey, it’s me…” I said and the tears started flowing.

Before I knew it, I was pulling down Andover Street and into my friend’s driveway. He was my puppy dog, and I was sure that was exactly what I needed. We’d met through some mutual friends a few years ago but I hadn’t seen him much since I started dating Adam.

He worked in finance, day trading mostly and had a great house with an enormous lagoon-style pool where our friend group used to have weekly wine parties. I had even taken to leaving a couple swimsuits in the cabana.

I sort of knew if the more-than-friends door was ever opened even a crack, he would push through without hesitation. But, for me, we were just friends. And girls can have guy friends.

After a quick, tearful hug, Ron was more than happy to usher me out onto the deck by his pool, letting me vent.

“He’s just such a prehistoric ape sometimes. I’m so mad.” I pressed the heels of my palms against my eyebrows then looked up to see Ron walking my way with two glasses.

He handed me a cool glass of chardonnay which I pressed to my lips immediately and the tingle of the wine on my tongue was just what I needed.

“Adam would be pissed that I’m having a glass of wine with you. He’s infuriating. Do you know, that we have a ‘rule’ that neither one of us is ‘allowed’ to have a drink with a member of the opposite sex unless we are together? So god damn stupid.” I took a long, drink and felt the hairs on my arms prickle.
