Suddenly, the back door of her car opened and someone climbed in. She jumped and let out a scream, turning to look at him. He wore a cap pulled down low and wore a khaki-colored jacket and dark jeans. There was some light scruff on his cheeks, but most of his face was hidden under the hat.

“W-who are you? W-what are you doing in my car?”

“I wouldn’t do it.”

“D-do what? Call the cops?” Her heart was racing so hard that she felt ill. She rubbed at her chest.

Calm. Chill.

Maybe she shouldn’t have had just coffee for breakfast this morning.

Great. Now she was starting to sound like Brody. He seemed to think she drank too much caffeine. She didn’t believe that was a thing.

“No. Well, that too. I was talking about trying to run them over. I wouldn’t.”

“I wasn’t going to do that,” she told him.

“You were thinking about it.”

“I wouldn’t have done it, though. I think about doing lots of things. Going for a run. Learning how to fly a fighter jet. Becoming a race car driver.”

“Two of those things sound far too dangerous, Bunny. I’m afraid I can’t allow it.”

Bunny?

“Hero?” she whispered. She turned back around, not looking at him. What was he doing here?

“I didn’t think you came out in the daylight,” she said.

“I’m not a vampire, Bunny.”

“I haven’t told anyone about you,” she said hastily. Why else would he be here?

“Shh, Bunny. Calm down. I’m not here because I’m upset with you. I know you didn’t tell anyone about me.”

“Thank God for that. The last thing I need right now would be to be assassinated. That would put a real damper on my plans for tonight.”

“And what plans would those be, Bunny?” he asked in a silky smooth voice. His hand came around to lie on her shoulder. His fingers ran over her neck. Arousal flooded her. Whoa.

What was wrong with her? This was so wrong. She was with Brody.

She’d barely felt anything down there since her kidnapping and now she had two men making her body stir.

“I have a boyfriend! I haven’t said anything to him about you.”

“Shh, Bunny. Stop getting so stressed. I don’t like it.”

So just because he didn’t like it, she was supposed to stop?

Lord help her.

“I know about your boyfriend. I’ve decided to allow you to keep him.”

“Allow me to keep him? Did that mean you thought about not allowing me to keep him? Wait, how come you get to ‘allow’ me to do things?”

“Because you’re mine, Bunny. Our lives are entwined, remember?”

“But I . . . I can’t be yours. I’m with him.”

“Who said you only have to be with one person? Society? I don’t live by society’s rules, Bunny.”

“No kidding.” That whole killing people thing was a big clue.

Why wasn’t she more scared of this guy? And why was she turned on by him? Stupid body.

It was hard to be scared of him when he’d killed the people who’d hurt her.

“But Brody doesn’t know about you. He won’t understand.” Was she really considering this? “I can’t keep you a secret from him forever.”

“Just for a bit longer, Bunny. Don’t worry about your little friend. I’ve been out of town, but now that I’m back, I’ll take care of everything.”

Um, news flash. That worried her more.

“Stop stressing. I mean it.”

Stupid Brad. If he hadn’t called her, insisting that she come see him, then she wouldn’t be here right now, listening to her Hero’s plans to share her.

But why did the idea of being with him and Brody make her hot? She had issues. Especially since every time she tried to make herself come, she couldn’t. The senator’s voice kept getting in her head.

Dirty slut.

No one will want you after this.

“I don’t like it when you worry.”

“I’m trying not to. It’s not that easy.”

She swallowed heavily. She didn’t even know her Hero that well. For all she knew, he could have dead bodies locked in his basement.

“What are you thinking, Bunny?”

“What’s in your basement?”

“That’s not what I expected you to say.”

“Sorry! Forget I said that!” She smacked her hand against her forehead. Dork.

“Don’t do that,” he warned.

“Sorry!”

Warm fingers wrapped lightly around her neck as he leaned forward. His breath was against her cheek. “Are you scared of me, Bunny? And before you answer, I should warn you that I don’t like liars.”

“Maybe just a little bit.”

“That’s because you’re a smart girl.” His fingers stroked skin. “But I would never harm you, Bunny. Always remember that. I’m here to protect you.”

Well, thank the Lord for that.

“I didn’t think I’d ever see you again after that night,” she whispered.

“Neither did I, baby girl. I fully intended to keep my distance. But I find myself drawn to you. I’m usually the bad guy, not the good guy. Although recently, I’ve had to be a hero fairly often. It’s because everyone around me is so incompetent. How hard is it to keep your woman safe? It’s like people think I’m some sort of superhero. Batman without the ridiculous outfit.”
