“Yeah. I’m here to kill the bad guys and rescue the pretty princess. Must say, never thought I’d get such a buzz out of being the good guy. I’ve always been the bad guy, you see.”

“B-bad guy?”

“Oh, now, don’t be scared. I’m not going to be the bad guy in your story. I’m here to make the monsters go bye-bye.”

What was with this guy? Or was it her? Maybe she was delusional? That had to be it.

“Are you a dream?” she asked.

“A dream? Do I seem like a dream? I’ve always been described as more of a nightmare.”

She flinched at that. “I already have enough of those.”

He was silent for a moment. “I believe you do. I can’t take them away, but I can ensure the people that gave them to you pay.”

“So, you came to rescue me?”

“No, I didn’t. Normally, I like to get in and out quickly. I didn’t really intend to stop for a chat. A quick job is a good job is a clean job. I should make that my motto. Perhaps I’ll get business cards printed up. Kind of a mouthful, though. I’m sure I can do better. I used to take whatever jobs paid the best. Now I’m a bit more circumspect. I like to kill the bad guys. Have you got any requests for the senator?”

“The senator?” She couldn’t keep up with him. What senator?

“You didn’t know? That’s the guy who kidnapped you.”

“Mr. Creepy Smile is a senator? Oh God, that’s even worse somehow.”

“Senator Jonathan Robins. Terrible senator. Horrid human being. So, no special requests about how he dies?”

“You . . . you’re really here to kill him? Should you tell me that? Oh God, you’re going to kill me too, aren’t you?” That’s why he hadn’t untied her.

“Huh. I wasn’t going to, but you’re right. I shouldn’t have told you anything. That is a conundrum.”

A conundrum? Was he for real?

“It is?”

“Yes. How can I be sure you won’t tell anyone about me?” he mused.

“I could pinky swear.”

“True, you could. Everyone knows you can’t break a pinky swear or terrible things happen.”

Yep, she was definitely dreaming.

Where were the guards? They had to be coming back soon, right?

“One of the guards could come in here at any moment.”

“I’m not worried about them. I snuck in while one was yanking at his worm like he thought it would magically turn into an anaconda. Seriously, it’s a wonder he could find that thing without a magnifying glass and tweezers. He definitely didn’t need his whole hand.”

Eww, gross.

“You should go,” she told him.

“Go?”

“You can still get away. The senator will be back soon. He’ll find you here. He’ll hurt you. Go. Save yourself.”

“What about you?” he asked.

“It’s too late for me,” she whispered.

“Too late? How is it too late for you?”

“I’m going to die, but you can save yourself. Get out of here before he arrives. He’s evil.” She shuddered.

“You want me to go and save myself? Leave you here to suffer?”

“I don’t matter. But you have a chance. You should go. Maybe I can distract them so you can sneak away.”

“Sneak away? You want me to sneak away?”

“Yes.” What wasn’t he getting about this?

“You do remember I’m here to kill them?”

“Yes . . . but, I’ll be honest here. You don’t seem very good at it.”

“Not very good at it? How would you know? I haven’t done anything.”

“That’s kind of my point. You’ve been here for ten minutes and all you’ve done is talk to me.”

“I can promise you, I’m very good at my job.”

“It’s so sad that I have to die this young. I’ve done nothing with my life.”

“Like ask your boyfriend to spank your ass? Truth is, you seem like you need a good spanking.”

“Brad would never spank me. He’s not really that sort of guy. He’d probably be disgusted if I asked him to.”

“Sounds like you settled.”

“Yeah, well, dominant, kind, protective guys don’t grow on trees. What I really want is a Daddy Dom, but they’re rarer than hen’s teeth.”

“A Daddy Dom, huh?”

“Do you think I’m weird?”

A beeping noise made her flinch.

“The creepy senator is here,” her Hero said. “I have to go.”

Was he going to leave her here?

She felt him move closer. “I’d untie you, but you can’t tell anyone I was here. And if you’re tied up, the cops won’t think that you killed the senator.”

“That’s smart,” she whispered. She felt sad. This guy was going to get himself killed.

“I have to go. You’re distracting me. I never get distracted. I’ve got somewhere else to be. Stop with your chitter-chatter.”

She didn’t think she was the one chittering and chattering.

“It’s okay if I have to die,” she whispered. “But can you check on the other girl?”

“Other girl? What other girl?”

“The one who used to scream during the night. I haven’t heard her lately. And I’m . . . I’m worried.”
