Whew. Because she didn’t really want to talk about what happened today.
“Yes! At the moment, it feels like all the darn time. More than I did as a teenager. Although living with six sisters meant there wasn’t usually much of an opportunity to ever have privacy. I think I was scarred for life by the number of times they walked in on me yanking my chain before my mom installed a lock on my door.”
And had he really just told them about how his sisters used to walk in on him masturbating? He looked over at Autumn then the Fox. Autumn was staring at him in shock, while the Fox was smiling.
Well, that wasn’t disturbing or anything.
“Oh, uh, um. Can we forget I just said that?”
Autumn nodded then winced. Shit. What was he doing talking about embarrassing masturbating stories when something had obviously happened to cause her to clean the house from top to bottom? And now she was pale and probably had a headache.
“While this was a fun talk, we have some serious things to talk about,” the Fox said.
He nodded. Right. What was going on with Autumn? They should already be talking about it. “I’ll go get dressed.”
“Why would you need to get dressed when I’m about to beat your ass?” the Fox asked.
Brody stared at him as Autumn sucked in a breath. “You’re going to spank him?”
“Yep.”
“Hot-diggity. I really want that popcorn now.”
“No time for popcorn,” the Fox said.
“That doesn’t seem fair.”
Ah, yes, it was. Like she should get to sit and eat popcorn while he was being spanked. Wait. Why was he being spanked?
“Why am I getting spanked?” he asked.
“Because you were naughty.”
“Uh, no I wasn’t. And even if I was, you’re here for Autumn. Not to spank me.”
“Why is he here for me? Not that it’s not good to see you, Daddy.”
“We’ll get to Autumn soon.”
“She’s got a headache,” Brody pointed out. “Probably due to her panic attack. And too much caffeine and not enough food.”
Autumn’s mouth dropped open. “Way to throw me under the bus, Brody-bear.”
But the Fox needed to know.
“Is that true, Autumn?” the Fox asked.
“I’m all right.”
The Fox crouched down in front of her, studying her. “No, I don’t believe you are.”
“I really am. Go back to what you were doing.”
“I don’t like being lied to, little one. You’re clearly in pain. When was the last time you ate?”
“Oh, umm . . .” She stared over his shoulder, clearly thinking. “I had a protein bar for breakfast.”
“You haven’t eaten since breakfast?” Brody said. “Tutu, that’s not good.”
“It’s not,” the Fox said firmly.
Relief filled him. He was glad to have someone else say what he’d been thinking. To back him up. And maybe to take charge for a while.
“Today wasn’t a good day.”
“We’re going to get to what happened,” the Fox told her. “Right now, I’m getting you some water and snacks.”
“Thought you said there was no time for food.”
“Changed my mind. I can do that. I’m the Daddy.”
Brody had to roll his eyes and Autumn grinned.
The Fox turned to pin him down with his gaze. “Did you just roll your eyes at me, Pup?”
“Who me?” he asked, pointing to himself. He stepped back. “Couldn’t be.”
“Ooh, I love this game,” Autumn said, clapping her hands. “Then who?”
“The Pup rolled his eyes at the Fox’s words,” the Fox said on beat.
Maybe he should run. He wasn’t a good runner, though. The only exercise he somewhat liked was swimming.
“The two of you need to learn not to lie to me. First, you have terrible poker faces, and second, I don’t like it. That’s a rule I forgot to give you the other day.” He stared down at Autumn, then over to Brody. “No lying. No secrets. You keep nothing from me, understand?”
Autumn looked worried, and Brody understood why. She wasn’t the best at communicating how she was feeling.
“Sometimes we might need a bit of coaxing to tell you how we’re feeling,” Brody told him.
“Coaxing?” the Fox asked.
“Encouragement. Positive reinforcement.”
The Fox frowned. “What? I can’t just spank you if you don’t do as I say?”
Brody shook his head at him.
The Fox sighed. “First, Autumn tries to take away all my fun by limiting who I can and can’t kill, and now you’re telling me I can’t spank you for not telling me everything on your mind. Be a lot easier if I could just spank you both whenever I wanted.”
“I’m sure it would for you,” Brody said dryly.
“Careful, Pup. You’re still owed a spanking.”
“What? No!”
“Another rule is that you don’t get to tell me no.”
“I think that might need clarifying,” Brody said, watching Autumn. “It doesn’t mean that we always have to do what he says.”
“Actually, I think that’s exactly what it means,” the Fox countered.
Sometimes . . . Brody really did get pleasure out of dreaming of strangling him.
