Stanley stands beside me, smoothing his overpriced suit. "Borden can be a prick," he says. The smug look on his face bounces back to me from the chrome and glass walls. "Just let me handle him."

I cut my eyes at him.

"Really? I've heard that he's nice," Sharon, one of the older paralegal's says before I can say anything. "Everyone around town loves him."

Stanley's smug expression slips. He hates being challenged. "Yes, well, they've never worked with him before, have they?"

"Well, I suppose they haven't." Sharon fidgets under his cold gaze.

"He's a shark," Stanley snaps at the older woman. "Just do what you're told and let me handle him."

"Of course, Mr. Maynard."

I reach out, touching her hand. She glances at me, giving me a small, grateful smile. Everyone on staff hates Stanley. He's a jerk for no reason. He's wrong about Micah, though. Micah isn't any of the things he said. He's amazing—a far better man than our boss will ever be. Stanley is just jealous that he'll never compete. He can't because he doesn't even compare.

He's a despot with thinning hair, icy blue eyes, and a smile that reminds me of a fish gasping when it's hauled out of the water. I really don't like him.

Thankfully, the elevator shudders to a stop on the top floor of Micah's building before he can say anything else. The doors slide open.

Naturally, Stanley pastes a smile on his face as he steps out to greet Micah, acting like he wasn't just talking crap about him. Jerk.

"Mr. Borden," Stanley says, his voice booming with false enthusiasm. "It's great to see you again."

Barely concealed contempt drips from Micah as he glances over Stanley, his lip curled up as if he can't stand the sight of my boss. He doesn't take his proffered hand, instead grunting as he looks past him into the elevator. His whiskey eyes land on me, desire rolling through his expression like a heatwave.

I bite my lip, fighting the urge to moan out loud. He looks so damn fierce standing there in his dark suit, those whiskey eyes eating me alive. Despite his polished, urbane appearance, there's an aura of danger and power emanating from him that's both alluring and intimidating as hell.

"Mr. Borden," I whisper, stepping forward to greet him.

"Micah," he growls, his voice sending shivers down my spine. He steps toward the elevator, thrusting his arm out to keep the doors from closing on me and Sharon.

"Micah," I repeat, my body skimming his as I step around him.

His breath pelts my neck.

Oh, God. I'm not going to survive this day. I'm going to melt into a puddle of desire right in the middle of his outer office.

Sharon steps off the elevator behind me as I try to focus on anything other than the intoxicating scent of his cologne. My gaze bounces around his office. It's incredible—sleek and modern, yet tasteful and luxurious too. The furniture is a mix of dark wood and chrome, creating a sophisticated and luxurious feel. The desks are organized and clutter-free, with high-tech computer screens and sleek accessories. One entire wall is made of glass, looking out over downtown Silver Spoon Falls.

A curvy blonde meets my gaze from the far side of the office, grinning at me almost impishly. I don't know her well, but I do know her. Gemma Marsh. Like me, she's fairly new to town. We met at the gym—the one place we both instantly decided we didn't want to be.

We ditched the workout and went across the street to get coffee and cheesecake instead. I like her a lot. I didn't know she works with Micah, though. I'm happy to see her here.

She hurries forward to meet me, her kitten heels clacking on the porcelain floor. "I was so excited when Micah said you were going to be here!" she whisper-hisses, flinging her arms around me in a tight hug. "These meetings are always so boring."

I practically feel Stanley's beady eyes boring into my back. I ignore him, returning her warm embrace. "They are boring," I whisper back. "I didn't know you worked here."

"Yep." She laughs lightly. "The big jerk is my boss."

"Trade you big jerks," I mumble.

She glances over her shoulder at my boss, her nose scrunching her. "No thanks. I'll keep mine."

A choked laugh escapes my lips before I can call it back. I'd rather keep her boss, too. Mine is the devil. "Is he still glaring at me?"

"Mmhmm." She nods, her brows furrowed. "He looks cranky." And then mischief dances through her eyes. "Micah doesn't look very happy about the way he's looking at you."

I gulp, stealing a glance over my shoulder. Sure enough, Stanley's glowering at me as if I'm doing something wrong by talking to Gemma, and Micah is staring at him like he wants to rip his arms off and beat him with them.
