Theo cuts in, looking just like his brother, with the same soft eyes and smile. “Dad, we’re not little kids anymore.”
“Yeah,” Jake says. “We want to see Mom’s work, anyway.”
“Not little kids… You know you’re only fifteen, right?”
They grin, exchanging a look. They don’t have to say anything for me to know what they’re thinking. Oh, Dad… The twins have been growing up fast lately, even talking about girls. I will be there, supporting them every step of the way, giving them advice, even if they don’t want to hear it sometimes.
“You’re lucky I’ve got your brother and sister,” I tell them, thinking of our three- and six-year-old. They’re with Gwen and Paul tonight. “Or I might cry every time you two big men act grown up.”
They laugh. “You’re not going to cry, Dad.”
“I might.” I scrunch up my face, making my crying noises. They’re not too old to laugh at those. “Looks like I’ve still got it.”
“Yeah, but, Dad, you’ll be able to make us laugh even when we’re three hundred and fifty-eight.”
I laugh. “That’s specific.”
“Forever, then,” Theo says, shrugging. “We’ll be old and wrinkly and have hair like you, Dad, and you’ll still make us laugh.”
“Even when we’re skeletons,” Jake says, nodding seriously.
I smile at my sons, enjoying the drive, looking forward to seeing my wife give her speech before the premiere of her biggest film yet.
