“He smiled?”
“Yep. And then he … gave me his blessing.” I gaze at Quintin, my heart full and happy. “I’m guessing a post-engagement Sunday dinner is in the works. We’re gonna have to plan another trip out to your parents soon, and—”
Suddenly Quin throws his arms around me and clings to me.
I settle my hands on his back, returning his embrace. We hold each other for the longest time, saying nothing, as the party carries on around us all over the pier and inside the restaurant. I rub his back soothingly, knowing he must be feeling so many things right now. It wasn’t so long ago that he and his dad were barely talking. Now, his boyfriend just asked the man for his blessing in marriage.
Sometimes, life likes to move in quick, sudden bursts, and then you don’t recognize anything anymore.
And you couldn’t be happier about it.
“I bet I know what’s got you so emotional,” I murmur as I continue to rub Quin’s back.
“What?”
“The fact that you never got to eat your dessert.”
I feel him chuckle in my grasp. “Yep,” he mumbles against my chest. “That’s it. You got me. I’m wrecked.”
“After you found the ring, bam, the proposal happened, you said yes for whatever crazy reason, the restaurant exploded with everyone coming out of hiding, and our meal was over.” I kiss his ear, then whisper, “It’s okay. I’ll get you as many of them as you want.”
“You promise?” he whimpers playfully.
“Of course.” I pull away from him to get a look at his pretty face. “I’ll do anything for my fiancé.”
He crashes his lips into mine right there, and the rest of it is history. As Quintin kisses me, I realize I’ll never again want for anything for the rest of my life.
I guess that’s why they call it a crush.
Because once you’ve found that special person, the love you feel for them is so powerful, your heart is crushed out of its original shape forever. It will never be the same.
And you will never want it to be.
The end.
